This is something I've thought about too. I know you can go to the Fed Soc

Security SSI website and obtain disability info. I know of many students who

are classified who also receive SSI, although while under 18 it is based

also on parent's income. I don't think it would vary from state to state as

SSI

is a federal program. Also, as far as school records, documents etc I don't

think that would hinder one from applying as there would still be SSI

criteria to meet anyway (i.e. evaluation by physicians, psychiatrists through

" the

system " ) just as in any disability case.

I know I can do some research and get this outlined on my own, but

thought I'd draw from any experience trhat may be found here.

Would they not at least qualify for Medicaid rather than SSI once they

become employed? I realize Medicaid takes into account income, but I believe

there is also a provision for " medical need " where certain

psychiatric/neurological conditions will let them qualify. I'm thinking in

terms of

prescription/health coverage without a cash benefit.

Hi Dana,

Our files section contains a copy of the current SSA " Red Book " which

discusses the work issue. My reading thus far has not made me overly

impressed with SSA's intent with respect to continuation of benefits during

a work trial.

Your concerns mirror mine with respect to my son's ability to cope with a

stressful work situation.

Take care.

Louis
