Please help me help my daughter. She is 12 yrs old. She has autism, non-verbal

and is delayed.

The teacher she has at school is strapping her in a chair.

Istated at her IEP meeting that I do not want my child physically restrained

(recorded).

I sent a statement out in Aug of 2009 that stated I do not want my child

physically restrained at school. I received response from the Director of

Special Ed In Hall Co and from an Asst Principal that my daughter would not be

restrained at school.

I dropped in on the class Christmas party and my child was strapped in a chair -

with her coat still on? in a very warm room.

Not only are my daughters needs not being met - they are adding problems by

causing her depression and shame and physically disabling her by strapping her

to a chair so that she's unable to walk.

We have worked very hard to make sure my daughter feels loved and give her every

opportunity to bloom. I have NEVER strapped her down.

I am heartbroken and furious. My daughter deserves so much more and the school

needs to know Loud and Clear that their behaviour is unacceptable.

I need help to help my daughter.

Is this written on the IEP document? If so, they are out-of-compliance with the IEP. Inform your school in writing that they are out of compliance with your child's IEP and that you will be informing your state's Dept. of Special Education of this...then follow through.HTH,Heidi Please help me help my daughter.

My son goes to a special school and you don't see kids restrained like this. Then to disregard you like they have! Terrible!

You need to speak to state compliance folks with the deparment of education for your state and do it right away. Put a letter in writing too like what has been suggested to you.

What did you do when you seen that??? I would have immeditaly when to the principles office and all H^% would have been unleashed!

Been there-Done that with the school system. I went to my senator and within 3 weeks JJ had his OWN teacher and his OWN aid that I Picked out!

After that the school system gave me what was needed for JJ and they moved fast! I Told no stuff off of them and they knew it! J is out of school now..he is 22 and I am soo glad! He does a whole lot better in his ay program and the people that work with him are great! Lois

I'm a degreed social worker who also has helped pass laws in my state for our kids. I've taken parents to talk to senators and heads of departments to get their horrendous issues taken care of.

One thing is for sure every state and situation may be governed by IDEA laws, but each state sure does handle things differently, and each state has it's own way that is the best way to get things done.

I sit in meetings and it's terrible sometimes, but overall most schools do what they can for kids and arent terrible. When they do blow it, they blow it big.

How do I find out what she needs and what the school will provide?

The school is not offering anything that isn't specifically requested.

My daughter is severely autistic and delayed and for her to be interested and/or

stimulated takes alot of effort.

She is also on 3 antiseizure meds which knock her out most of the time. I do

not feel that it is in her best interest to go to the school. Is it possible to

make them come here and teach her??

Also, she would be in our home (in my sight)!

Please read the book " From Emotions to Advocacy " that will help you prepare

yourself for what is coming next.

Here's a list of all the things you should start doing now.

1. request an IEP meeting immediately.

2. during the IEP meeting focus on both your daughter's behavior plan and ask

for her most recent evaluation results. If they have not provided standarized

evaluations then ask for this. The evaluations should help the IEP team decide

what your child needs. If there is no behavior plan, then request a behavior

plan immediately. State that your daughter should no longer be strapped for any

reason because there's no justification for it.

3. follow up all meetings and conversations with a written letter to the school

summarizing what was discussed and any question or additional comments. You are

writing these letters to document the situation in case you end up in due

process. Plus it will put the school district on notice that you are serious.

4. if you are unsatisfied with the school's evaluation(#2), then request an

independent evaluation... which can be provided by any professional outside the

school and the school district has to pay for it.

5. decide what you really want for your daughter

6. if you are concerned about the safety of your daughter, then write a letter

giving the school notice that you will be removing her from school. You have to

give 10 days notice if you want to protect your rights when you go to due

process.

7. don't forget to write the follow-up letters and pray a lot.

8. after you get your evaluations back, write a list of what you want.... it

doesn't just include goals but school supports. So does your daughter need a

behavioral expert? Just because the school doesn't have one, doesn't mean she

shouldn't have that. Then request another IEP meeting

9. spend time looking for professionals/schools/etc that can help your

daughter.

10. etc.

This is the start of the beginning if you are going to try to get your school

district to develop an appropriate program for your daughter. Remember the

program is individualized. Having school district employees provide teaching in

your home is considered the most restrictive setting. So that will be hard.

But I was able to get our school district to pay an agency provide these

services (teach my child) at home. I found an agency that was willing to

provide the staff. I already had an Autism consultant to train the staff

(school paid). And then I supervised / coordinated the program. The agency

staff worked with my son at home and the school paid for it. That worked at

well. Now five years later, the agency staff supports my son a half-day in a

school setting and the rest of the school day is at home.

It takes a lot of time and effort.
