We did not think it was necessary -- yet -- but that was her first choice of med, since my son's not open to CBT. She thought it might make him more willing to try exposures etc. (Right now we're doing inositol and omega and see slight improvement.) kimz It sounds like we're at a similar place. IL (14 years) doesn't seem too bad so I've been resisting meds because I think most meds cause something negative along with the positive BUT his Dr. thinks (and says he has seen) kids almost totally get over OCD with a little meds AND CBT! early on. The idea that we could nip it in the bud (the bud is 2 yrs old tho) is really attractive. He does ERT pretty easily but still doesn't really change -- has gradually more and more generalized symptoms so it kind of makes sense that it will keep getting worse if we don't nip it. Meds with CBT can actually change the physical brain. And I feel bad about having to try to do therapy with him everyday and talking about it several times a day, because I don't want him to get totally used to it always being there -- you know, identifying with it too much -- looking back on his childhood having this constant OCD presence. Guest guest
The hardest part to me is the initial med administration when you are most likely to see side effects without the positive effects. Once you see your child doing better (normal), you thank God for the medication. Dose changes are tough also - similar to the first time.
