Re-emergence of Behavior Problems

Hi, I am a new member to the group, but not to autism. I have an 11 year old

son with autism spectrum disorder. In the past, he has had much trouble with

SIBs and aggression, tantrum and meltdowns, mostly unprovoked. I felt we had

successfully dealt with these through a variety of biomedical interventions and

a comprehensive therapy plan.

For the past 3 years, we have seen very little of these behaviors. They pop up

now and again with illness, but they were largely absent and he made great

progress. Last spring, he started to ask " wh " questions and really seems very

tuned in to the world around him.

Beginning in August, my son began to experience tics. We took him to the

neurologist who confirmed that it was a simple tic, not seizures. The tics went

away. Slowly he seemed to become more compulsive and conversations became

limited. About three weeks ago, the tics came back severely (ticing all day

long). 7 days ago, he began to exhibit SIBs and aggression, agitation and

anxiety, all unprovoked (no antecedent). Sleeping has become a problem again.

Neurologist said Tourettes or PANDAs. 1\2 way through a course of antibiotics

that has not touched the tic or the behavior.

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? I'm extremely

concerned about the re-emergence of these problem behaviors, especially since

they were gone for so long. We have started him on Tenex in addition to

Clonidine (which he has been on for years to help with sleep). So far, no

decrease in behaviors or tics.

Thanks so much.
