Guest guest
Benadryl made Karac hyper too. About the only thing that ever calmed Karac down was Clonidine. she's driving me craaaaazy! autism Date: Saturday, February 6, 2010, 9:30 AM Morning all, Hope your day started off fresh and anew despite what we go through. I've been reading the posts and am really sorry about the aggressive behaviors that some of you are dealing with. Kaleigh's ritalin doesn't seem to be working all of a sudden. She's been so hyper lately that I've had to put her in her room for awhile just so I can get a break. In fact, she's in her room as I type...I hate to put her in there so much, but it's like if I don't, then I'm gonna lose my mind. She's been getting into one thing after another.. the trash, the kitchen sink, knocking over the space heater, knocking over stacks of mail on the floor, banging on the TV screen, taking off the couch cushions and throwing them on the floor...what is going on? I know she's 3,but geeesh. She's had her ritalin this morning but I might as well have not given it to her at all 'cause she's still as hyper as ever. One change I've made lately is that at night, I've been giving her benadryl to sleep because that trazadone just doesn't work. Could the benadryl be amping up the hyperactivity during the day and counteracting the ritalin? My eye has been twitching since Monday and I know it's stress and anxiety. Well, of course all your suggestions are so greatly appreciated.

Guest guest
I dont know your little girl at all but reading your post made me wonder if she would benefit from a sensory diet thro her day? I know I sure do!! LOL An OT can evaluate her sensory needs and develop some techniques specific to her that can be implemented throughout the day. In the meantime you can make your own sensory diet based on your knowledge of what sensory areas she is craving... It sure sounds like this might help...and sit sure wouldnt hurt..lol.. Just my 2 cents... she's driving me craaaaazy! Morning all, Hope your day started off fresh and anew despite what we go through. Guest guest
Let me clarify in case I confused some of you: We don't give Kaleigh the ritalin and benadryl together. She gets the benadryl at night and the ritalin in the morning when she wakes up and in the early afternoon. That's a pretty long gap between meds. So,that's why I'm trying to figure out what the deal is. The benedryl doesn't make her hyper at all. It works like it's supposed to...for now. > > > From: kjonesgirl <kjonesgirl@...> > Subject: she's driving me craaaaazy! > autism > Date: Saturday, February 6, 2010, 9:30 AM > > > Â > > > > Morning all, > > Hope your day started off fresh and anew despite what we go through. Guest guest
My daughter(neurotypical) and I both take Melatonin to fall asleep. Benedryl has the opposite affect and can give that yucky medicine head feeling in the morning. She takes the Sundown liquid sublingual cherry fl. Melatonin.I take 2 of the 3mg pills. My ASD son has always been a great sleeper and bedtime issues are one thing that, gratefully, we have never had with him, he is 11.Sent from my iPhoneOn Feb 7, 2010, at 12:18 PM, Christiansen <cathychristiansen84@...> wrote: my dan! dr told us that benadryl was a no no. source naturals makes a melitonin that we have been using for a year that helps my daughter fall alseep. Guest guest
I'm getting the sense that there are some benadryl bashers in here,LoL! Well, I will say that Kaleigh has never had any adverse affects from benadryl and that she wakes up in the morning fresh and anew and happy. She does not receive it every night either. Of course the dan docs are gonna be against benadryl; they're all about natural/biomedical anyway. So, I can see why the dan docs don't agree with it. So, I'm kinda' defending benadryl I guess. Kaleigh has a very high tolerance to drugs. When she was only 3 months old, she needed to get a fem-line put in so that she could get her meds while in the hospital. Well, she needed to get put under for that. Kaleigh needed the maximum dose just to get her to fall asleep! We couldn't believe it. So, for some reason, this girl can hold her own,LoL! My husband and I are seriously thinking about the GFCF for Kaleigh, starting with CF first. Mainly to get her bowels more regular. But I can def see how that diet can help with other things. We tried melatonin for Kaleigh in the beginning of the sleep issues. It worked for a short time, then she grew tolerant. Now she takes trazadone along with melatonin 6mg(this combination was approved by her psychiatrist and there are no drug interactions). Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't work. So, that's why sometimes we give her benadryl at night. We're still waiting for her doc to get back with us about the trazadone and see if we need to just try something else so I don't have to give her benadryl at all. But thanks for all the suggestions. I truly appreciate them. > > > > > > > > > From: kjonesgirl <kjonesgirl@ ...> > > > Subject: she's driving me craaaaazy! > > > AutismBehaviorProbl emsgroups (DOT) com > > > Date: Saturday, February 6, 2010, 9:30 AM > > > > > > > > >  > > > > > > > > > > > > Morning all, > > > > > > Hope your day started off fresh and anew despite what we go through. Guest guest
Caleb has problems staying asleep at night but not all the time. We give him melatonin nightly and for the most part it does work. If Caleb has a bad night where he woke up and stayed up for hours before going back to sleep. Then I give him Benadryl the next night. I don’t like the idea of giving him Benadryl every night. Caleb has a lot of allergies I need Benadryl to work when we need it. My doctor has recommended for me to give Caleb Benadryl on a nightly basis. I just choose not to. Benadryl works differently on everyone. It knocks some of us out and others it makes them hyper. Everyone is different and everyone reacts differently to meds. I do know what you mean about the Ritalin. Caleb is on the Daytrana patches for his hyperactivity. Some days I have to double check to make sure the patch didn’t come off because he is just so hyper that he is out of control. There’s nothing wrong with needing a break from your child. Be glad that you can realize you need a few minutes to regroup. Not everyone realizes it and the kids pay the price for it. It’s not their fault that they are out of control but it’s not yours either. I’ve tried the technique of taking a deep breath and counting to 10. Yeah it doesn’t always work. Ha ha My suggestion is that you check with her doctor about the Ritalin and Benadryl. I do know that by the time you are giving her Benadryl the Ritalin has wore off. Caleb was taking clinodine at night to help him sleep. You have to have a script from the doctor for it. When he first started the clinodine it worked wonderful but then his body got immune to it. Go take a long hot bath after she goes to sleep you deserve it…… Gwen From: autism [mailto:autism ] On Behalf Of Christiansen Sent: Sunday, February 07, 2010 12:19 PM autism Subject: Re: she's driving me craaaaazy! my dan! dr told us that benadryl was a no no. source naturals makes a melitonin that we have been using for a year that helps my daughter fall alseep.
