Guest guest
You sound like me 3 years ago! Hang in there! My son is still on the trazodone but we used a weighted blanket as well. This helps him stay asleep longer by giving him the deep pressure and security that he needs! You can find them online. I got mine on a site called avestedinterest.com. It helped a bunch. He does still get up once a night for a drink and then back to bed. Also use a little lavender oil spray; it is a natural calming action! -Sent from my BlackBerry Smartphone provided by AlltelFrom: "kjonesgirl" <kjonesgirl@...>Date: Sun, 10 Jan 2010 16:56:59 -0000<autism >Subject: Sleep through the night just once! She's been on melatonin, clonidine, and now trazodone w/combination of melatonin. All of these worked for a time until she becomes tolerant. Right now she takes 150mg of trazodone w/ 7.5mg of melatonin. I know it seems like a lot for a 3yr old and you would think this would do it for the night...nope. For the past two weeks Kaleigh's been waking up at 2 or 3 in the morning. So, I called her psych and he upped the trazodone from 100mg to 150mg. She still gets up. I'm getting so tired of this. So, she got up this morning at 2 on the dot. I had just gotten in shortly before because I helped chaperone a teen house party last night only to come home and have to put dinner in the fridge that my husband left out. So, basically dead tired to the world. As SOON as I hit the pillow, she's up! I was about ready to choke somebody. I gave her some benedryl ('cause if I don't she'll stay up 'til who knows when). She finally went back to sleep like way after 3, close to 4am. So, yes, I'm tired today and my red raging visitor is here...bad combination. But anyway, I would really like to know from you all what you've tried for your kiddos to help them to stay asleep. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Guest guest
I have read that the weighted blankets should not be used overnight. Cause I was thinking the same thing for my son, however everywhere I looked it said only to be used with adult supervision. I asked my OT about this and she said that if he would ever put it on his face/head he may not be able to breathe. Don't want to scare you but thought you should know what I heard. Guest guest
Hi, I don't know if this would help, but I think my son was a little older when we tried this. He would fall asleep with a inexpensive mp3 player with his favorite music. I think it was a zen stone which I found on ebay for less than $20 so if it got thrown or flushed down the toilet , etc..it wouldn't set us back too much. My son didn't mind the little ear buds but he was about 6 I believe. Date: Sun, 10 Jan 2010 16:56:59 -0000 <AutismBehaviorProbl emsgroups (DOT) com> Subject: Sleep through the night just once! Guest guest
20 minutes at a time is a good rule of thumb and yes..it needs to be used with adult supervision.. Guest guest
When Karac got older I also had him type a sort of social story on the computer. Karac can type with two fingers. It went like this: Sometimes at night I wake up and I can not go back to sleep. When I wake up, I must stay in my room. I can put a tape in the TV and watch a movie until I get sleepy. There were three nights during the Christmas holidays when Karac did this. He woke up at 4:00, but he was back to sleep by 5:00 and slept until 8:00. I know your child is too young for that, I find it always works better to tell Karac what to do rather than what not to do, i.e. "Don't come downstairs; don't wake other people up etc. Sleep through the night just once! > > > > So Kaleigh still doesn't sleep through the night and it's driving me up the wall, through the window and on top of the roof and now I'm about ready to jump! Guest guest
Cool, how innovative. You're right, kids, typical or not, respond better to postive commands. Good idea, thanks. Yeah, Kaleigh's only 3.5 but something to think about for when she's older. She doesn't really understand commands right now. Like,if I tell her to take off her shoes, she won't have a clue as to what that means. She requires a lot of hand-over-hand right now. > > > > > > From: racmac0204@ <racmac0204@> > > Subject: Re: Sleep through the night just once! > > autism > > Date: Sunday, January 10, 2010, 11:57 AM > > > > > > > > You sound like me 3 years ago! Guest guest
Yes, Kaleigh receives ABA, 5 days a week, all day. She's doing quite well so far. She's learning how to sit with her hands in her lap and she's up to 45 seconds:-) Very proud of her. It pays off too when we go to our religious services. She actually sits in her own chair most of the time now and we don't have to get up as much. > > > > > > > > > From: racmac0204@ <racmac0204@> > > > Subject: Re: Sleep through the night just once! > > > autism > > > Date: Sunday, January 10, 2010, 11:57 AM > > > > > > > > > > > > You sound like me 3 years ago! Guest guest
We still struggle at times with the sleep issues. I sometimes think that 's are related to her epilepsy though maybe. I do know that if I want her in bed at a decent time, she has to have her meds 2 hrs before bedtime. She takes clonidine for sleep too but it maybe doesn't help that much.LOL! I do know that when I see her looking sleepy she must be in bed immediately or we will miss that pt and she will stay up all hours. And then she will be up in the early morning hours again too. It seems if we let her control her sleep times she will only sleep a few hours a night. I also run a fan and pile the covers on. Her favorite aninal fleece blanket must be on top. We heat with a woodstove so if we keep her door shut, her room will stay cooler. She also likes it pitch black so I put a room darkening curtain at the window. And then I threaten anyone with their life if they get up early for work or whatever and make any noise. I wonder why men can't walk quietly or open cupboard doors without slamming them shut...ha. Right now we are in a good pattern with her going to bed around nine..plus or minus and she has been sleeping until at least 6:30.I have used melatonin before too. The time release seems to work better at keeping her asleep.I feel your pain..btdt many times. is 16 now. HTHs, Elaine
Guest guest
I can relate with sleep issues. Ricky has trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep. He takes Melatonin, 6mg at bedtime. 3mg didn't help. Even with the 6mg, he will wake up very early, sometimes around 4am. I never know when I go to bed whether he will be up early or not. I don't know what else to suggest, cause it sounds like you have tried alot of things. I am gonna start trying epsom salt baths to see if that may help my son. I am at a loss too. Guest guest
Here is another thought...I had sensitivites to the laudry soap my mom used when I was a baby. I didn't sleep more than 3 hours at a time up until I was 18 months old, when my mom figured out that maybe it was the scent of the laundry soap she was using. Now, this was back in the '70s, so I don't know what the soap was or anything. Maybe that could be something to check out. I do use unscented/hypoallergenic laundry soap, like All or Purex free and clear for all of my laundry in the house. Just an idea.
