Guest guest
Hi I am not sure what the absolute rule is right now at SLC. I know that there have been kids cast with slight runny noses and very mild coughs etc, as some kids always have a runny nose or cough regardless and this time of year many kids have a runny nose or cough. If it's very mild I don't know if the anesthesiologist will consider it as I know it has been done before. I guess it's totally up to you too how you think Tommy will handle it as to whether you may want to be even more cautious than waiting to see what the anesthesiologist thinks. We've been feeding Kieran cranberry juice day in and day out as the extra Vitamin C and whatever else seems to be keeping him in perfect health, or maybe he's just lucky. The rest of us have had colds come and go, and he has two sisters around his age, and he seems fine. Maybe a day of extra TLC?? I'm letting Kieran relax and watch all the TV he wants and staying away from places with children right now just to be sure, but it looks like we're going to be okay this time around, and the rest of us are now healthy too, not sure if it's the extra RnR or just luck, but I know a day has made a lot of difference here at times! If all else fails, I would call Angie directly and talk to her about it before everyone goes home tonight, she may be able to help you decide if you just aren't sure if you want to make the trip if you might get turned away. It is my understanding that if it's canceled it will likely be about a month before he's cast. With Kieran I wait until the morning of to cut off his cast and we've seen the anesthesiologist. But my son has an 80 degree curve that is currently being managed around 53 degrees and I feel he needs to make sure that he doesn't get left without a cast for a month or more. I shower him at the hospital before he gets his next cast and I have been very happy with this as I think it has the lowest risks for Kieran specifically, as I feel that even if he had a bad sore overnight won't be enough time to heal the sore. -- It's just what I do, and I think every mother does something differently, especially from this, but if any of this can help I thought I would add my two cents. Hope Tommy feels 100% very soon and to see you on Monday, everyone looking good and healthy! Shauna Mother of Kieran, and Kelsey > > So Tommy Lee woke up this morning with sneezes, a slight runny nose, but no cough. I made an appointment to see his local Dr. today, I'm just afraid we are going to be told that he cannot get his next cast put on Monday Have any of you parents still had a cast placed if your child had a runny nose? I remember Bex's last cast was postponed and I'm worried that we will travel all the way to SLC to be told it's a no go....On top of that, we had planned to remove Tommy's cast on Sat to give him a breather and a bath, but now I'm not so sure that's a good idea, especially if we get turned away on Monday.. > >
Guest guest
Hi ,I wouldn't cut the cast off. Getting a slot in the OR is hard at SLC - so it could be a few weeks before you can get rescheduled, so you should really think about it before you cut the cast off. When you get to SLC you can ask the anesthesiologist to access your child - and then if he says he thinks it is a go, have them cut the cast off. It isn't so much the runny nose - it is the lungs and how clear they sound. Also if you child has any issues with the anesthesia, they will take that into consideration. SLC has 3 anesthesiologist and some are more conservatve - so the one who is scheduled will have the final say if it is go or not. Guest guest
Well after a trip to out local Ped. and a few calls to Angie at SLC we decided we're going to postpone this casting for a few weeks. In my heart I think I'm being overly cautious but I would really hate to travel all the way there to be turned away. I also think that with Tommy's other medical issues they would definitely err on the side of caution...I'm kind of bummed that all this mental preparation was for nothing but it would've been worse had we traveled all the way to SLC. I guess Dad will be happy too since this mean no traveling during super bowl LOL. Good luck on Monday Shauna!! Well be praying for low numbers for Kieran, too bad we won't see you guys > > > > So Tommy Lee woke up this morning with sneezes, a slight runny nose, but no > >cough. Guest guest
awwww, that's too bad! You won't regret postponing though, better safe than sorry! A few weeks in the cast won't do a bit of harm and may help hold the correction the way it did for Heidi's son Bex. Hope Tommy is better soon and your next cast goes well with low numbers. Either way you are doing the very best for him. Hopefully we'll see you and your beautiful family again another time, we where really looking forward to it this time!! Love to catch up on things with you guys when we get a chance. Best of luck and thanks for the thoughts our way! Take care, Shauna > > > > > > So Tommy Lee woke up this morning with sneezes, a slight runny nose, but no > > >cough. Guest guest
,Bex had a fresh cough and runny nose in December- it was the cough that got us turned away, it constricts their throat with inflammation and that can make intubation more dangerous, especially in children. It was frustrating at the time, but it wasn't worth the risk, of course. Guest guest
Just saw the update- I think you're doing the right thing. The longer time in cast turned out to be good for us : ) Heidi, Bexon's Mommy, (3.5 years old, in 9th cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 63 degrees to 14.6 in cast.
