Guest guest Posted January 13, 2011 Report Share Posted January 13, 2011 According to the pioneer of ET, the time it takes for the child's series/solid block of EDF casting to be complete, is about equal the time from diagnosis to their first properly applied series of EDF jackets/casts. This is just a general rule and certainly doesnt apply to all children. Children treated earlier seem to benefit faster than those treated later. This is common for children who missed their window to be treated early. Their curves are maintained and corrected a bit by casting during the winter months, and then their braced during the summer to enjoy life and water activities. Nora braces each summer but she's in her 9th cast and we've been casting for 2 years and 3 months. Dr P has said that unless a miracle occurs casting isn't curing Nora, just buying us precious time before she receives a VEPTR. If we could've caught Nora's scoli at Abby's age I wouldn't agree to our summer breaks. I know that at Greenville Dr P let's quite a few kids have summer breaks, Nora's even had a break over Christmas once. Guest guest Posted January 14, 2011 Report Share Posted January 14, 2011 Thanks everyone for your replies. My husband and I were very apprehensive about taking a summer break. Not once did we ask for a summer break. We want to continue with casting until the correction is complete if at all possible. I know that some people opt to take a short break in the summer so that their kids can swim. I realize that this is especially true for older kids who are at an age where they are asking to go swimming. But, Abby is so young, that she doesn't care one way or the other about swimming. So, we have decided that when she gets her 3rd cast applied in March that we are going to tell her doctor that we do not want a summer break.
