Guest guest
Katrina The falls do get better - you will be surprised at how strong her core will be once she gets used to the weight of the cast - It took about a month for us in the first cast before Londynn had gained enough strength and balance to keep us from following her everywhere she went - she did have several hard falls, thankfully no broken bones - hang in there - it will get better! On holidays at the in-laws over Christmas, Isabelle (in cast for just over a week and sleeping in a double bed) took a tumble out of bed and must have tried to brace herself with her arms and now we have one broken arm in plaster. It was 38 degrees in Melbourne today - poor darling has more surfaces covered in plaster than without. > > She is falling over quite a lot (even prior to the arm broken) - both forward onto knees/arms and backwards like a tree falling. > > Thinking we may need to do knee and wrist guards, aka skate board style if balance does not improve. > > Any other options anyone has used to help with the falls? Guest guest
Hi Katrina, Sorry, lil Isabelle broke her arm! I think we saw 2 cast kiddos break their arms in 2010 and I had never seen this in years prior. This will probably become more prevalent as more kiddos have access to Early Treatment w/ EDf casting. I've noticed that balance does seem to get better as the spine improves/corrects and hope this will also be the case with Lil Isabelle! Sincerely, HRH > Hi Everyone, happy NY to all. Guest guest
Oh my gosh, you are not the first to have a little one in 2 casts- we have had 2 or 3 on the group! The balance in the cast across the boards of age is the worst in the first cast- they gradually get used to it. Usually takes around 2-3 weeks, our guy was stuck on the floor like a turtle at first and couldn't get down on the ground and back up- he's a pro now and has no downtime either in or out of casts. We stayed close by and used those colorful number and letter mats that fit together like a puzzle, also we made a playpen with plastic gates with the mat and toys/books inside of it.Heidi, Bexon's Mommy, (3.5 years old, in 9th cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 63 degrees to 14.6 in cast. Guest guest
I'm a little late in answering but my little Isabella was one of the kids to break her arm this past spring. She broke her forearm in 2 places and had to be put under to reset the arm. She was in the ER 4x in 3 months for falls because when she starts to fall, she falls forward and quickly. I've become a "Hover Mother" because of all the falls, there's not much else you can do. Good luck!!!
