What a temper..getting the cast off

OK...she here we are, trying to cut off Abigail's 3rd cast. Cast #1 came off

real easy, cast #2 with a little fuss. But cast #3 she in no way, hell or high

water wants us anywhere near her with those tin snips. And she is terrified of

the saw. So, either we endure screaming here at the house, or screaming at the

doctors office.

We tried doing little cuts while she was sleeping, but she kept stirring and

rolling to the side we were cutting on..

any other methods to get the cast off?

Thanks,

-Ami

Ami,I have never attempted taking Grace's cast off at home, but what I've found about most medical procedures, it is better in the long run to let the doctors and nurses be the "bad guy" instead of us, the parents. When Grace had her surgery, a few days after they had to remove her chest tube. As much as I wanted to stay there by her side, I know ultimately it was best for her that I left. That way, IF she remembers any of it (they gave her Versed), she knows I wasn't any part of doing the painful stuff. So if Abigail's throwing a fit either way, I'd leave it up to them to take it off. No sense you having to fight her about it and the saw will be much quicker.Just my

thoughts. JaneFrom: luckyvtmama <amibeautinet@...>infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Wed, January 12, 2011 6:28:06 PMSubject: What a temper..getting the cast off

Thanks Jane, I was kind of thinking along the same thing..it might be better if

she doesn't associate us with this and end up resenting us in the long run..

Exactly. This way you can look like the comforter while they're cutting it off. Grace hates the cast saw too, but they have 2 different ones at our facility, one is attached to a shop vac and the other isn't. The one that isn't is much quieter and Grace handles it a lot better. Is it maybe the vacuum sound that is bothering Abigail? If so, maybe you could ask them if they have one that isn't so noisy.

Hey--

We use a dremol tool to cut Logan's off. He doesnt like it as well...but its not nearly as loud as the super duper saw they have at the dr and it doesnt take nearly as long as the tin snips do.

We also have a small piece of metal that we have padded a little to slide under the cast where we are cutting to ensure that we dont go too far.

Hope that helps!
