Hi isn't crawling yet nor is he trying to walk. He has always been between the 3rd and the 5th percentile for weight but around the 50th for length. He has his one year check up tomorrow. I will let you know what our pediatrician says about the delays. isn't casted yet. So I think that the delays are because of his high curve. My daughter is 2. She has had 1 cast to date and we are waiting on cast 2. My

daughter started to scoot on her butt around 12 months of age, she could pull up

with our fingers similar to what you are talking about at the age of 1 as well

but not on furniture and she wasn't walking at one. She took her first steps

holding my fingers at about 9 months but didn't fully walk until she was 21 1/2

months. She was delayed in the walking department. Also, we thought my daughter

would never crawl since she was a butt scooter but she started crawling at 16

months. She started to pull up on furniture shortly after that. It was so tough

to see all the other kids her age walking and/or running and she wasn't. It

broke my heart. We just stuck with it and sought out our state's Birth to 3

program.

As for height/weight we are in a different boat. My daughter was adopted from

Ethiopia so at 6 weeks of age she weighed 12 lbs and was very tiny overall. She

wasn't on any growth chart so less than 3rd percentile. We had a battle to get

her caught up but to date she is 50th plus percentile for weight and 83rd plus

percentile for height. She has come along way in the 19 months she has been

home. That said with her first cast, her appetite went way down. She would eat

smaller meals more often. She didn't get sick at all in cast but just didn't eat

a lot.

I can't say enough about Birth to 3 or your state's early intervention program.

They are wonderful and a lot of times free or on a sliding scale based on

income. We have had 2 full evaluations annd multiple sessions of physical

therapy. My daughter is now no longer qualified for services but when she did

qualify the therapists were great.

Our son had his first cast applied at 32 months and experienced

fairly rapid weight loss because of carrying around the extra weight

of the cast. He literally dropped right off the growth curve! We had

to up his calories quite a bit to recover. Hard to do though, when

he would be uncomfortable with too much food in his tummy. The trick

was always how to add calories without too much extra bulk. He was

in a Risser cast for 10 months, and recently got his first EDF cast

(Yay!!!) The EDF cast is noticeably heavier than the Risser, so

we're back to being concerned about weight loss. On the up-side, in

this new cast, he went from 53 degrees to 30! We're so thankful!

My son had the same issues with the casting. He would throw up a lot

when he had the cast on and the minute it was removed everything was fine again.

The doctor kept telling me that it wasn't caused by the cast but even his

pedatrician said she thought it was. Especially since he would only throw up

with the cast on. didn't walk or crawl until he got his first cast on

which was at the age of 15 or 16 months. But after the cast was taken off his

health improved.

actually is 4 yrs old now and has growing rods put in his back. I got

tired of fighting about the cast causing him issues that I went and seen another

doctor for another opinion. Since has recieved growing rod his health

has greatly improved and he's actually gaining weight.

**My daughter didnt walk until 14 months, but did pull herself up on

furniture and started crawling right on time.

2) Has anyone experienced issues with their child gaining weight? How

**My daughter has always had weight gain issues. She was at the top of

the charts for head circumference & height, and below the chart for

weight. Even to this day...She is currently 13 yrs old, 4ft 2in and

weighs only 64 lbs., and she hasn't had a cast for approx. 4 yrs.

**In regards to casting, before the pioneer came out to SLC in May 05 my

daughter was treated w/ turnbuckle & basic Risser casting (no windows,

2-dimensional casting) and tolerated it ok. After the pioneer came Liv

was treated w/ EDF casting specialized for growing children (w/ the

windows front/back) and she tolerated it a lot better. We never once had

vomiting or skin issues and I'm sure this was due to experience and the

specialized cut outs or windows in front/back.

An FYI- my daughter didnt get her 1st cast (turnbuckle)until age 2 and was

not treated early.

Great correction Patrice! There are clear differences between Early

Treatment w/ EDF & proper windows & standard Risser casting. Can you tell

just by looking at his new EDF cast, and also in Simons overall comfort?

Grace is only slightly delayed in speech. She wasn't an early walker, but she did fall within the "normal" range at about 18 mo for full walking. She is smart as a whip tho and can recognize all letters (capitals and lowercase) and numbers 0 through 10 at least, shapes, colors, etc. She is also isn't toilet trained, but that isn't due to development, its another physical anomaly we are currently trying to get to the bottom of.

Grace was born at 8 lbs 4 oz. Had major abdominal surgery at 1 day old (her liver was on the outside of her body) and was in the "normal" range (around 50th%) for her weight up until she was almost 2 yrs old. At that point she was in a brace, but only at nighttime and naps. Grace has only gained maybe 3-5 lbs in the last 2+ years. She is average on the charts for height, but weight has significantly dropped, even before she began casting. I had chalked it up to her abdominal issues and the fact that I know of no "Omphalocele" kiddo's being overweight. But then, when she was out of cast, we noticed that she scarfed food (still no weight gain, go figure), but still in smaller amounts than other kids her age and would like to eat much more often. We tested the theory using her last brace, which looked just like one of her casts, with the belly cut out and all, she'd barely eat if we set her to the table with

her brace on, but if we let her eat without the brace, she'd eat gung ho. So I do feel whether it's ultimately the pressure on her tummy (may still be due to stretching of her scar tissue through the opening) or the cast/brace itself, it is all related.

You also have to consider, that the kiddo is carrying around more weight with a cast/brace. So that alone will burn more calories. I try adding calories too whereever I can without adding bulk. I will also give her snacks when she asks. I've considered pediasure, but am afraid she'd like it too well and it would be more filling and she'd actually eat less.

Jane, thank you for the insight. I hadn't considered before that he'd burn more

calories in-cast from the extra weight. I noticed there is a helpful handout on

the ISOP website for boosting calories, and I'll definitely start trying some of

those methods.

The GI doctor we saw recommended the switch to Pediasure instead of whole milk

for additional calories, so we took put him on that a few weeks ago. He seems to

have a healthy appetite for table foods on top of the 4 bottles he gets of

Pediasure a day - he still eats 3 meals and 2 snacks daily.

Isn't it so frustrating? I feel like our surgeon and pediatrician are playing

I'm reluctant to have another cast put on Jack without some answers from our

ortho surgeon. I don't think he's ever experienced the vomiting issue with any

of his other patients, but I feel like that's something we have to address

Thanks, . Jack is the same with his stats - he's always been average for

head circumference, around 10-15 percentile for height, but in the 3rd

percentile or below for weight.

I can tell Jack wants to walk; he's so eager to take steps when he's holding

onto my fingers, but he's unable to support himself yet.

With his first Risser cast, he did have one 3inch window cut out to allow space

for his stomach to expand, but it didn't seem to help. I noticed through some

research that other types of casts are more open, and I thought maybe a

different cast type might be helpful in avoiding the frequent vomiting.

Thanks, Keeley. I'm still trying to get a hold of our ortho doc to ask him about

developmental delays that could be associated with a curve ('s is at a

34, down from the 36 before his first cast).

Good luck with the one year appointment! The shots are always the worst :/

program. Our ped mentioned physical therapy and a possible visit to the

neurologist to check if there were any other issues that may be causing the

delay.

weight up with the new cast.

I plan on bringing up different casting options with our ortho surgeon when we

's curve did change when he was in the cast. But b/c he would get so

sick while in the cast that when we cut it off it would take so long to get him

healthy before he could get recasted that it didnt do any good what so ever.

Our doctor did the blame game with the pedatrician too. But to make sure that

it wasn't anything else the pediatricina pretty much tested him for everything.

But it always came back to he would get more sick with the cast on then off. I

got so tired of playing games that I went to another doctor.

does have a lot of problems gaining weight. Until they put him in

traction back in April Matt was stuck at 26/27 lbs. But now he is 32 lbs. He

still has problems gaining weight but at least he is healthy and running around

now. Plus his appetite has imporved a lot too b/c he eats like a little piggie

now. Before I could hardly get him to eat much of anything b/c he threw up so

much.

Excellent point Jane. I agree 100%. Our kids must burn off more due to

the cast and the extra work they have in carrying it, maintaining balance,

etc...

I agree. The specialized windows in front & back are so very important

for comfort, to reduce the risk of any chest wall deformities & to address

rotation. The pioneer of ET w/ EDF casting for PIS developed these

windows especially for rapidly growing children. The windows are an

important principle to adhere to when applying proper ET.

I didnt realize lil M. had been in traction. What a trooper! My daughter

always gained weight when she was in halo gravity traction, as well. She

gained 8 lbs in her last traction procedure! Im glad is eating

more, gained a bit and is happy & healthy.
