Hi , my daughter was 3 1/2 when first casted. She started at 56* curvature and is now down to 42* out of cast(after 5 casts) and in cast is at 17*. Yes they are not in the rapid growth stage, but I truly believe the older kids can still benefit. You sound like you are doing the right research for your child and that is the first step. Where do you live and what hospital are you thinking of going to. Make sure they are Mehta trained and they have the proper casting frame. Hopefully others with older kids will chime in soon. Hope this helps.Amy J mom to Allie(4) going in 7th cast tomorrow Greenville Sc ShrinersSent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerryFrom: "" <dubsgirl13@...>Sender: infantile scoliosis treatment Date: Tue, 30 Nov 2010 20:59:09 +0000<infantile scoliosis treatment >Reply infantile scoliosis treatment Subject: Casting after age 3 Hi everyone, my daughter has had severe infantile scoliosis and last year we stared with the brace but it hasn't done anything to help her. The doctors want her to have the growing rod surgery next spring and I am so scared. My daughter Jada is 3, she has heart defects and lung problems that make surgery risky and I just don't feel confident that she is going to get through the surgery without complications from her other problems...not to mention she just had open heart surgery less than 4 months ago! Ive been reading a lot about the casting and there is a hospital not too far from here that does it but all the info I've read refers to children younger than 2 years old. Does anyone have any information about older kids being braced and the success rate? Thanks so much! H.

Hi ,

We casted Grace at 3 yrs 1 month. She has congenital scoliosis (her hemi-vert was removed the month prior and T8 and T9 were fused). Pre-op her curve was about 53*, post-op it was in the low 40's. She is fused at 5* and our doctor was able to get her down to less than 10* in cast after only 4 casts. Out of cast she is still in the low 20's. We have been out of cast in a brace (for various reasons) for 6 months and all the bracing did was hold her curves. She will be going back into a cast on 12/20 and she is now 4 yrs and almost 3 mo. I think as long as the kiddo is flexible anything is possible. Keep in mind that bracing won't help rotation either. So something else to consider.

Grace was also in braces prior to her surgery and all they ever did was maintain her curves, there was never any correction and the rotation in her low spine continued to progress.

Thank you so much for that information!! I am going to call Shriners in Portland

Oregon and schedule an appointment. My father in-law is a member of Shriners so

we are already approved and I checked online and they are Mehta trained. Have

they told you how long your daughter will have to be in a cast and where they

expect her curve to be at once done? At this point I would do the casting even

if it took 5 years because it's better than surgery every 6 months! I hope to

hear from more people but this alone gives me hope that we can do the casting

and avoid surgery.

My daughter has a heart defect and scoliosis. She started out in a brace at 18

months and her spine got worse, so we started casting at age 2. Her scoliosis

has not improved; however, the cast is buying her time so that she doesn't have

to have surgery right now. If the doctors at Shriners will cast your daughter,

you may be able to put off surgery for a couple years.

Hi ,I just want to say I so agree and welcome to CAST! Older kids can take longer (depending on the child, flexibility and growth spurts, etc...) but they absolutely can benefit big time from casting and also sometimes be "cured". At the very least, casting holds off on surgery much better than bracing with progressive cases. That growing time is very valuable in the long run.My advice is to act fast because the sooner you begin, generally the shorter the treatment needed. We wish we had begun sooner, but wouldn't change our decision for the world. Welcome to CAST ! You have come to a great place for gathering

solid info on Mehtas Early Treatment method w/ EDf casting. Please read

Dr. Mehtas published article titled " Growth as a corrective force in the

Early Treatment of progressive infantile scoliosis, " which can be found in

the Files section of this group. I think you may be able to watch A New

Direction DVD on line as well. Both items will really help you to

understand the principles & benefits of this gentle, corrective treatment

modality. It sounds like you are on the right track, so share your

questions as they come up and let us know how we can help!

So true...If ET w/ EDF doesnt completely cure, its a superior way to buy

invaluable growth time in many cases. EXCELLENT point . Thanks for

pointing that out!
