Guest guest
I wrote to the author of this study asking her about her methods and this is her reply. She replied very quickly Sally Dear Sally, I used the Scan test which is a set standardised tests of auditory processing skills, before and after TLP and the children all improved and this has a knock on effect which leads to the improvements parents see. Parents observations are the subjective results. If you look at my website www.toolsforlife.co.uk you will see my paper on work in school done previously. I had 2 autistic children among the children using TLP in school. I used a simple test then for auditory discrimination and memory, all improved and, school annual test results which were independent of me, to show the improved academic performance as a result of improved auditory skills. I go to work with this parent group in Northern Ireland, for autistic children, every few months. If it made no difference then I doubt I would still be being invited. I get no benefit for presenting the study, from ABT or anywhere else. I am not looking to increasing my workload. I do not consider TLP works miracles but in my experience it improves auditory skills for all ,which helps with communication and educational progress. It helps autistic children in particular filter out extraneous noise, which overstimulates them There can be many other benefits but I find they vary with the individual. The most noticeable side effects are calming and improved sleep pattern. The programme is expensive so where possible I try to get parents to share it, to spread the cost. It does take half an hour a day over 20 weeks if you run through twice, but it is no great hardship to do.Personally I think the long term benefits justify the expense of time and money. However I do think it would be helpful if it came through school. In the UK there will be two studies coming out soon with results to show efficacy of TLP with autism and others. TLP is coming into school here via occupational therapy and speech and language therapy. The results in this study are for verbal children. It can do a lot for non verbal children but there are no standardised tests you can use with them. They can increase eye contact and it can initiate speech but many non verbal children need additional programmes working on integration of primary reflexes as well. I do not work for ABT but for the children, and the purpose of the study is to let people know that it is a resource which could help their children. The part of the study with results from parent questionnaire is the last chart only. The rest is from the Scan test which, are the standardised test scores. I hope that is helpful.
