I am no doctor and this only what we did and no I never called my doctor to ask. I know my son better than his doctor of course.

When was sick with like what you are explaining, I didn't think twice about keeping the brace off for a few days.

Or like you said put it on loose. Hope he feels better soon.

Ok, so now Doc has a horrid cold with a fever. He's already got a long history with pneumonia. So, when I put his brace on him, he WHEEZES horribly. Without the brace, he's stuffy and feverish, but no wheezing. So, Hubby and I agreed no brace for a few days until he gets over either the fever or the cold. When we put him in it, we're doing it looser than normal, but for the most part, we've been leaving it off as much as possible.I'm going to call Shriner's on Monday and ask, but does anyone have any advice? We're already doing nebulizer treatments (he's on orders for them as needed since the last bout of pneumonia) and cold medicines/fever reducers as needed. His temp isn't high enough for a trip to the ER (he's only running 99-100.5F). We're doing lots of fluids as well.aMommy to Doc 19 degrees in brace

I have found that if Thaddeus is starting to get sick I will take the brace off, It seams like he gets better faster. Might be from being mere comfortable and it's easyer to breathe. I also have to take his brace off for him to eat beach the brace is so tight now. Can't wait to get the new one :) Mom to Thaddeus Sent from my iPhoneOn Nov 21, 2010, at 4:09 AM, Tasha Fontenot <ryanswalk@...> wrote:

Thanks everyone! I know it sounds like it should be common sense to take the brace off when ill, but I always worry that I leave it off too much. The doctor at Shriner's, when we were there in September, told me to just use my common sense on the brace- 23 hours a day is the goal, but is more a guideline than an absolute- especially since Doc has developed what he called compensatory curves. He thinks that with the compensatory curves that Doc will out grow the scoli on his own without too much more intervention since his scoli has improved dramatically since they've appeared. Still, even with the doctor giving me leeway like that, I get nervous about leaving it off more than a few hours.I don't want to undo all the good that's been done, you know?On the up

side, outside of a bit of sniffles his fever is staying under 100F and he seems to be in better spirits. He's been displaying his boredom a lot more than normal by throwing things at me and yelling at me to "Go Mawk Do-we-an a samick!" (Go make Dorian a sandwich! Dorian is his real name.) If I don't move fast enough he yells for his brother to "Go mawk Do-We-an ah bod- dah!" Bossy little thing. Barring further fever spikes, the brace will go back on tomorrow.aFrom: "heather@..." <heather@...>infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Sun, November 21, 2010 1:19:16 PMSubject: Re: Breathing and Braces

I take the brace off of Caden as well. Last Easter when my son was in a cast, he developed a cold that turned in to a severe lung infection. He was unable to expel any mucus. He was coughing so much against the cast, that one of his air sacs ruptured in his lungs. The doctors, sawed of his cast and he was hospitalized for 4 days.
