Hi everyone my name is Kristy, Im new here and had a cpl of questions. Basically

my husband and i were told last week that our 11 month old son Brennan has

Infantile Scoliosis. My husband and i noticed his spine starting to curve around

Aug / Sept while awaiting his appt w/ our Pediatrician i did some internet

research so when she mentioned Scoliosis i was already familiar w/ the term.

She mentioned setting Brennan up with a Orthopedic Specialist and Shriners ...

She briefly mentioned casting but first we would need an MRI / Xrays to get an

idea of the degree of the curve in his spine and to rule other possible

neurological problems etc ..

I found out today that they can not find a Orthopedic Specialist in our area (

we live just outside Greenville / Spartanburg SC )who will accept our insurance,

They mentioned possibly finding a PS around Columbia or ton SC ( 1 1/2 -

3 hrs away ) ..

We actually have a Shriners in Greenville which is just 15 - 20 miles away .. So

im trying to find out why she cant just refer him to Shriners especially since

our Shriners specializes in Orthopedics or is it he needs a referral from a

Orthopedic Specialist to get into Shriners. Can his Pediatrician refer him or

can my husband and i just fill out the apps for Shriners ?

We are very worried and even more so because his pediatrician just seemed

shocked after looking at his spine considering at his 6 month checkup there

wasnt any problems or noticable problems with his spine.

Since Aug Brennans spine seems to be curving to the left his stomach and ribs

are protruding and he is having some minor breathing problems. Were just very

worried , saying alot of prayers and wishing the best for our son.

Becoming a patient at Shriner's doesn't take a referral, only a qualifying diagnosis. I would contact the Shriner's and get the application process started. It can take a few weeks to hear back and then longer sometimes to get an appointment.

Hi and welcome to CAST! You can apply directly, you don't need a referral. Google Shriners and call, email or fax to get into the system. Don't wait for a reply to a fax, though, get the name of the Care Coordinator there who handles the casting appointments and be "politely pushy". Can anyone give that contact info? The thing they need the most to see are the films (X-rays/MRI) Heidi, Bexon's Mommy, (3 years old, in 8th cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 62 degrees to 20 in cast)From: notblonde08 <notblonde08@...>infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Thu, October 28, 2010 2:48:39 PMSubject: Son recently diagnosed with I.S , Shriners question ..

Hey Kristy!

We live in NC and drive to the shrinners in greenville SC. WE LOVE IT! Dr P has been wonderful! My son Logan started casting at 9 months old with a 45 degree curve. He is now casted at 0 and we are getting our 5th cast on wed. With this daunting disease...the shriners hospital has embraced us and made this journey more easy for us. Man did we have a hard time in the beginning.....no one in NC wanted to help...nor did they offer casting. We got the wait and see....and we will brace him until he is 13 YEARS and at that time we will do surgery. Good luck with that. I was not having that...I figured its 2010...there has to be something else out there. thats when I stumbled across the group on the internet. THANK GOD! we then got a referal to shriners and everything else is history. I would not have changed a thing since our journey led us here. We have casted Logan a total of 6 months...and we have recd better progression each

time.

I highly recommend the SC shrinners =))

Kristy,

There shouldn't be any reason why your son's pediatrician can't refer him to the

Shriners in your area. That is how my daughter got into Shriners. Her

pediatrician referred her. My daughter goes to the Shriners in Lexington, KY.

The doctors there also do the Mehta casting. i would ask the pediatrician and

explain your insurance situation to her. It truly is a blessing to be able to

not have to worry about medical bills and having everything covered by Shriners.

Best of luck with your son. God Bless.
