There are a couple families on here who do have more than one child with scoli but I don't believe its common. At least you will know what to look for this time so if it does happen proper early treatment can begin. Don't stress. Guest guest Posted October 20, 2010 Report Share Posted October 20, 2010 I just had my second. We were told the chances of having two is near impossible. So far our second doesn't show any symptoms. I will say that just from being on the group that I have only seen 1 or 2 families with PIS though a few seen to have another child who gets adolescent scoliosis. I am not freaked out about it but I will keep an eye on both boys until they stop growing. Read Cameron and Dylans Story on www.infantilescoliosis.org They boys are both doing great! Cameron did not get treated early and Dylan did. Their curve types were identical and they were both diagnosed as infantile progressive. A very interesting story and great family. The boys are now thriving due to ET and EDF. Guest guest Posted October 20, 2010 Report Share Posted October 20, 2010 Hi,I just wanted to chime in that when our doc in SLC diagnoised our second with Infantile Scoliosis he said that we were only his 3rd case of a family that had 2 children with Infantile Scoliosis. And this is from one of THE most experienced doctors in Infantile Scoliosis in the country. He said in the 2 other families - one child progressed and one did not. I'm only sharing what I was told by my doctor and families I know, so read this with that knowledge in mind Our doctor told us he felt it was important that we know that risks for scoliosis can be greater once someone in the family is diagnosed (if you have it, there is a greater chance one of your children will, etc.). Now that comment was to generalized scoliosis. He clarified that he wasn't saying other children would likely have infantile scoliosis, but cautioned us not to miss any screening opportunities for juvenile or adolescent scoli for our other children (we have 5). Additionally, my husband has a sister who developed adolescent scoli and I have a niece who developed adol. scoli ... both only required monitoring and neither progressed to the level of needing bracing. I also have a friend with twins who both developed juvenile scoli, both had rods placed within 6 months of each other. Her younger son has now also developed juvenile scoli, minor curve at this point, but he has not yet hit his adolescent growth spurt. Our doctor felt it was important we know to look for early signs as all of our children continue to grow since he felt there was not enough research out there to indicate one way or the other that that shouldn't be done. So, while doctors may not be seeing many siblings with infantile scolio, that's not to say that there might not still be a greater risk for juvenile or adolescent scoli. So I personally think there's something to the genetics of it. Thanks for sharing!
