Guest guest
Hello Everyone! I am new to this site, but I am so glad that I found it. My 20 month old son has severe infantile scoliosis and will be having the Mehta cast put on his back in the coming weeks. The Dr said to plan on doing this every 6-8 weeks for the next 2 years. My sons curve is currently at 81 degrees and the Dr said that surgery is inevitable. I am nervous about him going under anesthesia so much, but grateful to be given the opportunity to have this casting done. I have heard so many great things about it. Can any of you parents please tell me what I should expect in the coming weeks after the first cast is done? The Dr said that he should bounce right back after the procedure and probably will not even notice a difference. Any feedback would be very much appreciated. Thank you all! Guest guest
It's true- the kids barely seem to notice that they have a cast on. To them, it's more like they're getting a hug all the time.My son fussed for the first day- more over the sedation wearing off than the cast. Within two days, he was up and getting around. By the second cast, he was finally walking! Things you'll notice- some kids lose weight in the cast. They weigh around 3 pounds, so it's about 10 percent of their body mass they're carting around non-stop. I started giving my kiddo pediasure and instant breakfast mixes with snacks to give him some extra protein and calories. Not all kids need that, though. For the most part, the kids come through fine- the Mamas on the other hand... no matter how many times I've gone through it, I'm a nervous basket case. lol! We're here to listen when you need us!aMommy to Doc down to 22 degrees in first braceFrom: amandaharrelson1984 <amandaharrelson1984@...>infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Sat, October 9, 2010 8:32:42 PMSubject: 1st cast Hello Everyone! Guest guest
My 22 month old daughter is in her first cast and doing great. The day of the cast she was tired and a little crabby and didn't eat much. The next day she asked me to take the cast off but was crawling, pulling herself up and rolling over. By the third day she was cruising all over, sitting up and doing great. She hasn't once complained about not being able to take a bath. She does eat smaller meals more often now but I don't think she is losing weight. My daughter was not fully walking independently when she got her first cast because of her scoliosis. She since her cast and her ankle supports she is walking more and more every day all by herself. She was a super star and bounced back super quick. She was cranky because of the anesthesia for sure but once we were able to get in the room to see her she calmed down quickly. Our kids are amazing. It is definitely tougher on us moms. Hang in there. , Kiya, 22 months, 50+out of cast, down to 15* in first cast, Shriner's Chicago > > It's true- the kids barely seem to notice that they have a cast on. Guest guest
We actually call Makenna's cast her 'hug machine'. She even cried last time she was out of cast because no one was hugging her! the kids adapt beautifully - it's harder on us than them. I have a video posted of Makenna on youtube of her bouncing on a trampoline, swinging and climbing. and a video on my FB page of her doing a forward rol!!!!! I couldn't even believe that one. just her reminding me again that there are no limits and I should NEVER underestimate her the video on youtube is titled Child with Progressive Scoliosis in Derotational Cast...or something close to that. my account name is sosmakenna, so you could probably search that way too. Good luck, keep us posted on how things go and ask away.... amy. mom to makenna. 3.5 years in 4th cast. treated at Chicago Shriner's. Guest guest
Noelle had her's put on at 18 months.... The first 3 days were very tough and the first 2 weeks tough, but then just fine for us. She didn't like the cast at all at first and kept tugging at it. She didn't like the feel of it under her chin either. Initially, she needed a pillow under her shoulders to sleep. She also needed a few days to adjust to sitting up without being propped and to get used to bending over to pick up toys and getting up from the floor. I had no idea to use poise pads, so initially she had quite a few diaper leaks and was quite smelly for about 2 weeks. After, we all adjusted and life was quite normal. She's been very able of doing just about everything any other kid can do and hygiene is no longer an issue. Please let me know if you want to chat as our kiddos were very close in age when they first started casting..... - Noelle's mommy, 3 1/2 years oldRochester NYCasted 8 times for 1 1/2 years9 months in braceRegressed and currently in cast 9reflux, mild plagiocephaly, mild torticollos, hypotonia, ligament laxity, suspected Ehler's Danlos III From: amandaharrelson1984 <amandaharrelson1984@...>Subject: 1st castinfantile scoliosis treatment Date: Sunday, October 10, 2010, 12:32 AM Hello Everyone!
