had her 4 yr physical today. Her main ped had a med student along with

him, he's examining , listening to her chest and says to the student,

" Did you hear the murmur? " with a half-smile on his face since it's

interesting medically. I'm sitting in the corner and my jaw drops. He looks

over and says, " Has she always had the heart murmur? " I'm like

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What next!!!!!!!!! But it turns out

it's an " innocent murmur " which he says something like half of all kids this

age have. It's nothing, a maturational issue. But boy did he get my

attention! You know that feeling? Sheesh! I'm just grateful it's nothing.

The med students are always so charmed by her expertise in exams, being so

comfortable with docs and breathing for the lung check before they even ask,

etc. etc. Yeah, it is cute, but it's sort of sad to know that it's from so

much experience. Anyway, she's at 75th percentile for weight, 90th percentile

for height!!!!!!! GO EMILY!!! I swear that growth is due to lifesavers candy

or lollipops, 'cause it sure ain't from real food! Kid never eats!

I forgot to mention her early intervention assessment if you can believe it,

but I did get all the tests ordered. Just have to wait for a referral # for

using an outside lab... the person who does those tends to take a few days to

do it but if you try to rush her she gets testy. We had trouble with her way

back when before I knew how to work her. Since then I've learned to kill her

with kindness and I started really paying more attention to her... " "

even brought her a gift once. Works like a charm!

I'm glad it's an innocent murmur, but that doesn't mean you won't have to

use prophylactic abx before dental visits. Did you ask the Ped about that?

Even innocent murmurs must be taken seriously at dental visits.

le and Sandi:

Thanks for your input, it's worth an ask. Funny coincidence to hear the

murmur this time because at this appointment I was also asking for a new name

for a recommended dentist, as the one they recommended previously was not

taking any new patients when I had called before. has never been to the

dentist and I'm nervous about that first appointment. I've had a lifetime of

dental issues, but then again, they all stemmed from one fall (on the face)

at age 6. I'll ask the ped AND the dentist about the abx, howabout!

Thanks

Our Ped is awesome about prophylactic abx, but our dentist is terrible!!

I'm wondering how she managed to not be sued by now--she never even asks if

has been pre-medicated with antibiotics!! And he's had open heart. It

just kind of shocks me. Also worth asking while you're at it--what about

when she loses teeth? We ('s Ped and myself) are in the habit of also

giving the abx to him for a few days every time he loses a tooth. It's

really important to keep those nasty oral bugs out of the blood stream.

On a different note: I'm praying for you guys. Just so you know :)

Thanks so much! You're so sweet. I don't know what I'd do without all you

guys.

On the heart thing -- I just read a couple things about " innocent " heart

murmurs in children and there are some ped cardios that feel that probably

90% of kids have it at some point between age 4 and 7. General thought was

that proph abx are not needed if it's truly an innocent murmur. Doesn't mean

I won't ask, just means I'll believe them if they say it's not necessary!

Can't believe your dentist's blase attitude... good thing has a smart

mommy.

Kellly,

My son has a Stills murmur or an innocent murmur. He has been checked by a Ped

Cardiologist at Stanford. We were told he would not need abx before dental

visits. Our immune agrees. I made sure due to the fact that I have to because

I have MVP murmur and the dentist will send me home if I have not taken my abx.

He has not had a problem. But I would ASK the cardiologist first if it is

needed.
