Logan is 14 months also and we have been battleing the crib since his first cast. He LOVES sleeping on my husband as well. We have tried everything with the crib....we were wondering the same thing about the toddler bed...but we were scared about him falling out as well. If someone pipes up with an answer I would LOVE to try anything at this point. Sleepy sleeperson.

We just switched to a Big Boy toddler bed, bought online from Target for about a hundred dollars. It has some protective side rails and is pretty low to the ground- a "sleigh bed" style wooden look. It was free shipping and arrived in about a week. We put those colorful soft foam ABC and 123 mats down around it to soften a fall.We didn't have to buy a new mattress because this style uses the same crib size mattress we already had- it's a transitional bed.It is a good idea to put baby proofing locks or tall gates on the door, in case they get up while you're sleeping, and of course tether furniture to the wall for safety.Hope this helps! A toddler bed would be better than the kiddo falling off of you or your spouse and landing on the floor in my opinion. I moved my kids the first time they "crawled" out of their crib. Because they didn't just crawl. The attempt to get over the railing meant FALLING on their heads. I put a gate up at their door so they can't get out of their room though. I think it's common for kids to reject the crib after getting their cast.  Todd sure did.

After similar sleeplessness, I finally made a palette on the floor for him, and it worked like a charm.

After a month or so of his sleeping great on the floor palette, we bought his big boy bed:

A good twin mattress and a low-profile foundation (like what you get for a really REALLY tall mattress) from Macy's furniture.  No bed frame.  We just put it right on the floor.  We got a bed rail with mesh cloth between the metal parts, and he was all set.  Never had any problems!  When we put the bed on a frame, we just placed a step stool near the foot of the bed so he could clamber down without falling in the night.

(The toddler bed wouldn't have lasted long for us anyway since Todd was rather tall, and since the cast made it difficult for him to move around in the crib, I was pretty sure the same mattress in a different frame would not have been any better.)

Hope this helps.

Peace,

, mommy to Todd

ohh..I like the idea of the twin mattress on the floor. I was thinking the same thing...its the same matress different frame. We dont have the problem of him crawling out....he just acts like the crib mattress is similar to cement. With my older two...we never switched until they tried to crawl out...but I really dont know why I keep thinking Logan is going to follow suit when he has paved his own path since the moment he was born! lol! Thanks for this idea! I just didnt think that far. Im blaming the no sleep =)))

I'm several days behind on posts but wanted to let you know that we had to switch beds. My daughter was 23 months when she got her 1st cast and she wouldn't sleep in the crib, in fact, she screamed! We had to switch when she got so mad she climbed/fell out of it. I figured if she fell out of the toddler bed, it would be better since the bed is close to the floor and the toddler bed does have sides for a portion of the bed at least ours does.
