Hi All,

My son, n, is in his first cast (he is 18 months old now). He got it in

July and now 2 red sores have appeared by his hips. I was just wondering how

you all treated these. I have him wearing pamper diapers but am wondering if a

pull up would prevent the rubbing on his hips. He is a small guy so I am not

sure if they even make pull ups small enough. I am worried because I don't want

these sores to get any worse. We have had such a trying time with this first

cast and with a hospital stay and all. Thank you all for your advice! Not sure

what I would do without you all!

Hi ,That is very common on the hips, rubbing and redness- as long as the sores aren't too deep- it's important not to let them get infected. Does your child's cast have moleskin on the bottom of the cast, or an under cast t-shirt that softens the rubbing? You may want to try polysporin or another ointment and blister band-aids, as long as your child won't eat them at that age. Some people like triple cream, I used Weleda Calendula baby cream from Target and others like Aquaphor to help stop the irritation until the skin adjusts. My daughter gets these too. Although she is no longer in diapers, she is little for her age and bony. We always use Auqaphor and neosporin. Also add extra moleskin around that area. If it looks like it is getting worse you may need to cover the sores with gauze. We had to do that with her first cast. Hope this helps.Amy J mom to Allie(4) in 5th cast Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerryFrom: "shannonclune" <shannonclune@...>Sender: infantile scoliosis treatment Date: Wed, 08 Sep 2010 14:16:13 +0000<infantile scoliosis treatment >Reply infantile scoliosis treatment Subject: sores on hips Hi All,My son, n, is in his first cast (he is 18 months old now). HEY SHANNON! SIERRA IS 16 MO. & THIS IS HER 3RD CAST. THE CAST IS TOO LONG. THEY TRIMMED ABOUT 2" BEFORE WE LEFT THE HOSPITAL BUT IT IS RUBBING SORES ON EACH OF HER HIPS. THIS IS THE 1ST TIME WE HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE. WE USE THE PAMPERS CRUISERS TOO...THE EXTRA THIN MORE ABSORBENT & I USE CHILDREN'S BAND AID B/C THE REG. ONES BREAK SIERRA OUT. I HAVE BEEN USING AQUAPHOR & NEO SPORRAN ALSO. ONE SIDE IS WORSE THAN THE OTHER. SIERRA HAS THE T-SHIRT & IT IS SO TIGHT AROUND THE HIPS I CAN NOT REALLY PAD IT AND MAKE IT STAY..WITHOUT HER PULLING IT OUT! LOL! I AM GLAD U POSTED THIS QUESTION! IF I COME UP WITH ANYMORE IDEAS I WILL LET YOU KNOW! TAKE CARE!

We switched to a pull up and had much less rubbing on the hips. It does happen

though and is totally normal. The cast has to be kind of tight there to anchor

it which allows for rotational correction.

Hi ,

My son is about the same age as yours and also in his first cast and we had the same problem. I put breast pads( the kind of pads for nursing mothers) by the hips. I just tucked the pad under the cast and then folded the rest up on the outside of the cast and the sore completely healed. Good Luck.

My daughter is also getting ready to get her first cast. Just wondering - Is

there room between the cast and the skin to maybe put thin (spandex-like)shorts

on her to prevent sores?

In the beginning it may be a little snug for that, but it slightly loosens up at the hips as they grow taller in cast. It depends, though, the cast should be anchored firmly at the hips, but you may be able to tuck them up with your fingers.
