in Mozart and the Whale for Millennium Films and helmer Petter

Ron Bass adapted the script from an article that ran in The Los Angeles

Times back in 1995. The article centered on a couple who both suffer from

Asperger's syndrome - a form of autism. Harnett plays Jerry Newport, a math

savant who falls for Meinel, a music and art savant. Soon, because of

their inability to relate to one another, their talents and their

relationship suffer.

Lawrence optioned the rights to the L.A. Times story and the life rights of

both Newport and Meinel and then brought the material to Bass. The project

was initially being set up at DreamWorks as a directing vehicle for
