Guest guest
Tristan was evaluated by Dr. on Tuesday, and began the protocol that evening. The school is having problems getting the meds in him in the morning as he detects tastes and smells very well He told us much the same as I have read from other list members, and we are hopeful about the treatment. Today was a day that my buttons were pushed by the school personnel and I feel like we are regressing in that area. The bone of contention is the Gluten/Casein Free diet that they have never approved of and have harrassed us about constantly. I thought that it was a mute issue until today when we discovered that the teacher called the doctor intending to tell him that Tristan is on the diet. She didn't ask us about this until she was told they couldn't share any information with her without written consent from the parent. My daughter called the teacher to determine what she wanted to talk to the doctor about. She told her that she wanted to ask him about his research, that she had gone to his website and her question wasn't addressed. My daughter told her she would approve the teacher talking to them about medication, dosage and side effects but nothing more. I called the teacher to find out more about this. I offered to send her the handout we received about the research and protocol and then she asked me if we told the doctor that Tristan is on the Gluten Casein Free Diet. I told her of course we did, but afterward realized that she still believes the diet is a bad thing for Tristan and that irritated me greatly. I called the Principal to tell her that the teacher intended to do this, and that it was inappropriate and outside the periameters of her job description. It is not legal for her to pry into Tristan's medical information, etc. She defended the teacher saw nothing wrong with it, etc. I got more irritated and she said if I was going to talk to her " that way " she would not talk to me, and I (regretably) told her I was going to call the superintendant and hung up on her. The Superintendant listened to me rant about the treatment we have received from the staff for years about the diet, although two different letters are in his files from specialists stating he is on the diet at home and at school. This has meant nothing to them. Has anyone else had problems like this with the school. They infer strongly that the diet is harmful. It was a very stressful afternoon and I think any ground we gained in teamwork and a positive relationship has gone backwards. This is a sensitive subject for me as they well know because I prepare two full meals a day to match the school menu, as well as send 4 snacks. It is hard work as you all know and quite expensive. But still they harrass me about it. Anyone else have these problems?
Guest guest
I am always amazed when people say the GFCF diet is harmful!! Please ask the school how they think the diet is harmful and then ask them if they have ever heard of Celiac's disease. I'll bet you that half of the people at that school are themselves on the Atkins diet which can be very harmful for certain people. I have learned to just simply tell school and everyone else that my child is highly allergic to wheat and dairy. " Allergic " they seem to understand and respect. That doesn't help you now. Perhaps you can have his food allergies tested and maybe you'll get lucky and it will show up as a food allergy. Then you could show those results to the school. Just a thought. Guest guest
Hi, What is written into the IEP regarding the diet? If you are doing the diet under your doctor's supervision, you should have great support for including any diet restrictions- as they relate to school- into your child's IEP. Once it is in the IEP, then you have the leverage you need with the school district staff. Approach any problems you are experiencing by proactively addressing them through the IEP (during your ARD), instead of battling ISD personnel during the year. Good luck, J. P.
