Guest guest
I know of a person who may be able to help you locate a place if you're in the DFW area. If you'd like me to forward your e-mail to her, let me know. I know a few days doesn't sound like much time but if a particular medicine could help, that may be all she needs to get stablized. In the meantime, carefully watch for what seems to be triggering her head banging sessions -- keep a diary of what happens right before and during an episode; keep a list of all foods she eats and what potential allergens or chemicals she's exposed to; check your emotions as it is happening and try to stay as calm as possible (I imagine this is extremely hard given the severity but often our kids' behaviors get much worse the more freaked out we get or they may do something more if it makes us stop doing something or get something faster); watch for sensory things around her that may be aggravating her like sounds, lights, etc. Often you can see a pattern that leads to such an incident and possibly be able to reduce it. Also, if she'll allow it, give her as much deep pressure throughout the day as possible to help calm down her system. Gaylen

Guest guest
Where do you live? Have you tried a psychiatrist? Or a developmental pediatrician or neurologist? They can all prescribe medication if that is the route needed. Also, I am a firm believer in applied behavior analysis. A board certified behavior analysis can look and see if it is behavioral. But this truly could be medical. I am not a doctor and my child has not been self-abusive but I know parents who¹s child has been. I will contact them and get back with you. Hang in there. This is so difficult. Liz Dallas. On 1/20/04 11:36 PM, " rhuehlefeld " <rhuehlefeld@...> wrote: > I have a 8 year old daughter that need in patient treatment for here > sever behaviors. Guest guest
>She is beating her head so hard and often that she either makes her nose bleed or I have to watch her for head injuries< There is no place or agency I can recommend. My grandson also has self abusive issues and sometimes aggression toward others. Different sources have said that it is likely any number of biological triggers that cause our children to harm themselves. It can be high yeast, or from something they eat, or viral/bacterial assaults. Someone said that in Tristan's case it is probably viral and that is what Dr. addresses in his protocol which Tristan just started. I don't believe there is any hospital especially psychiatric that can help your child if it is any of the reasons listed above. I hope there is someone here that can help you. Guest guest
Rhonda Sounds like you need to at least take advantage of the few days that you can have her treated so you can have the time to look for a more long term placement. I know that the State Hospitals have to admit her because they are funded by the state. She can go there as an emergency commitment. I used to work at the adolescent center here at Austin State Hospital and it really was a good place. I know there are State Hospitals all over the state that work the same way. I am talking about State Hospitals not State Schools. State Hospitals deal with psychiatric care which autism also falls under as far as a diagnosis. You must get help right away for her as well as you. She will be nowhere without you so you have to take care of yourself too. You could take her to the E.R. and they could at least give her something to stop her from hurting herself. I know that the State Hospital can at least help. Do you have one near you? Please do something now. I am here to help. in Austin PLEASE HELP US, PLEASE I have a 8 year old daughter that need in patient treatment for here sever behaviors. Guest guest
Rhonda I am writing again. It sounds like you need to do something immediately. A lot of these suggestions you are getting are great but they are long term plans. You and your child are in crisis and need immediate help. That is why I strongly suggest the State Hospital and I know the one in Austin was great. It is not as awful of a place as one thinks. At least not the childrens and adolescent centers. I still have a lot of frineds that work there. Let me know if you need more advice. PLEASE HELP US, PLEASE I have a 8 year old daughter that need in patient treatment for here sever behaviors. Guest guest
Rhonda, Have you tried having your child wear a helmet during her abusive episodes... at least until she gets the kind of long term help that she needs? Our son has a helmet that was loaned to us by the OT at school that the teacher and I pass back and forth each day in his backpack. On rare occasion we use it if he starts hitting himself in the head. Just an idea--I know the feeling of being desperate to do something to relieve them of their pain. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your child!! a

Guest guest
Rhonda, If your child is in a public school, I would call the Special education superintendant and tell them your situation. I know most school districts have something called non-educational funds. This will help pay for some respite so that you can have time to get yourself together and plan a course of action. I would also recommend you ask your school district for some in home services. That's the only other thing that hasn't been mentioned yet. Good luck, and we will keep you and your child in our prayers. Chris > I have a 8 year old daughter that need in patient treatment for here > sever behaviors.
