Guest guest
We rank 49th in the country for Special Education. What kind of services are you looking for your daughter? ABA is a struggle to get here.....it is possible, but not without a fight. I guess it depends which county. We are here because the military put us here....it is the worst I have ever seen for educating our children with special needs. I have been able to make lemonade with lemons, but it took a good two years of persistent advocacy and litigation. My son is 5 1/2 with high functioning autism as well. Feel free to email privately if I can help you in any way or tell you which areas are better than others. We currently live in Arizona and we will be moving to Ga in about 3 weeks. I am wondering if anyone can help me out. We have not bought a home out there yet. We will be staying with my brother in Winder GA and would like to stay in that area . Does anyone know if there public schools out there are pretty good for kiddos like my daughter? Right now she is in Kindergarden and has an aide for her to help her stay on task. Also we have and IEPs goals set up for her. I know its a different world out there and this is all going to be new for me and my family. I just would like to at least get the school idea and figured out. I just would like to know what schools are good and what schools to stay away from. We have some schools out here that are not so good. Any help would be great. Also do they have thys. that come to your home or do you have to go to there locations? Betsy Loiacono Educational Advocate PLSP IV "In matters of style, swim with the current. Does anybody have a link showing the rankings and what they're based on? I'm not disputing the rank, I've just always been curious to see what that means. Thanks

Guest guest
You asked for some information about rankings of education ? Well, there are several ways to obtain this information but this is just one survey completed late last year. Here, GA doesn't show as 49th but very close to the bottom. as you can see. These are the findings of the Education State Rankings, a survey by Quitno Press of hundreds of public school systems in all 50 states. States were graded on a variety of factors based on how they compare to the national average. These included such positive attributes as per-pupil expenditures, public high school graduation rates, average class size, student reading and math proficiency, and pupil-teacher ratios. States received negative points for high drop-out rates and physical violence. Different ratings are based on different criteria so any State, I would imagine, could vary depending on what the criteria is that is used. Hope this helps to clarify some, Bowen Massachusetts Connecticut Vermont New Jersey Wisconsin New York Minnesota Iowa Pennsylvania Montana Maine Virginia Nebraska New Hampshire Kansas Wyoming Indiana land North Dakota Ohio Colorado South Dakota Rhode Island Illinois North Carolina Missouri Delaware Utah Idaho Washington Michigan South Carolina Texas and West Virginia (tie) Oregon Arkansas Kentucky Georgia Florida Oklahoma Tennessee Hawaii California Alabama Alaska Louisiana Mississippi Arizona Nevada New Mexico
Guest guest
I would suggest carefully looking at the criteria they are using & if they are looking at the school system as a whole or seperate categories. I noticed Virginia is ranked 12 on that list & as far as special education goes that is way off the mark. I currently live in Virginia & there's a slight possibility that we may be moving back to GA in the future. I wish I could find the website that ranked schools by special education services I just can't remember where I found it. Anyway Virginia was ranked around 47 on that list. The county I live in has excellent education services for regular education, but special ed is severly lacking. Wendie > You asked for some information about rankings of education ? Guest guest
That's one reason I never really put much stock in the state rankings. If GA is 50th on the list but the school my child is going to is one of the top in the state, individually it could be one of the better schools in the country too, just weighed down by severely under performing schools in the state. Then again, #1 in GA may still be at the bottom in the country. So, I just go by how Bren's school is doing. I have always been curious about the rankings though since people use 49th all the time. I just wondered where that came from. And now I know one place to look for rankings and how they are done. And we're better than 49th there. So maybe things are getting better thanks to people like those on this list who are such good advocates for their child. I try to do my best as my child's advocate too. Thanks to everybody here for all the ideas they share that I can pull from. cigarboxgrl wrote: > I would suggest carefully looking at the criteria they are using & > if they are looking at the school system as a whole or seperate > categories. Guest guest
OK, when I read the post I thought it was saying GA Special Education ranked 49th, not overall school systems. I wonder if HHS keeps any kind of tabs on special education. Anybody know? Guest guest
I agree about the different Education rankings being very subjective. And there's so many different ways to get that information - you have to wonder about their comparison criteria and whether they are comparing apples to apples or apples to oranges. Even in the " bad " States , we all know that there are good school districts where children are doing well and parents are happy. And in a high ranking state like Vermont, perhaps there are " bad " districts too. On a different scale, I see it a little like the low performing schools issue because even in one of those schools identified as " low performing " , a child can get an appropriate education. Conversely, in a top rank\ed school, an individual child may come nowhere close to receiving FAPE. In a low ranking school, there are individual success stories too so this information can be useful but may not always tell the true stories,
