Have tried ALL the tips, too many to list...none worked for my guy. I finally

spend much time and 'parent psychology' convincing him that it would be 'cool'

to swallow a pill. Part of my 'parent psychology' plan included buying a large

quantity of empty capsules and having his 'typical' brother, my wife, and I

swallowing these capsules and making a game out of it. After a couple of weeks

playing this game at game time (he wanted no part of this game) and a few

stomach aches later, I handed him a capsule and said, " Jack swallow this " .

Well... you know the rest. He still will not swallow some pills...depends on

taste. I can break these up and put them in capsules. He is highly taste

sensitive. Now if I could get him to eat something besides cheetoes and

goldfish!

Hi ,

I noticed no one has suggested anything yet so I thought I would get

the hints started. One of the tips I have heard is to start with a

soft pill like a vitamin E gelcap so it doesn't hurt the throat if

they tense up when swallowing. That did not work for us. I used a

Nordiac Natural Fish Oil product since it was even smaller-like a

teeny tiny pea size. My son decided to bite it and of course it

tasted horrible. That blew it for us. He has a terrible gag reflex

and will actually vomit if he is forced to eat/swallow something he

doesn't want to.

We are now able to have him swallow very small tablets with the

following procedure (we are still working up to capsules). I am

taking one of his vitamins that comes in tablet form and cutting it

into a very small size and we are working our way up to bigger

portions weekly. My son does well with counting or clapping out

beats so we went with that. All of us modeled the steps while

counting and clapping out the counts to an even beat. We all take a

pill at the same time so it is like a game. One, two, three: pill

goes into your mouth in position--the back of the tongue; one, two,

three: water in mouth; one, two, three: swallow. In the beginning

we did the First/Then. First we take the vitamin, then you get your

treat/prize.

I look forward to when my son can swallow all of his vitamins and

enzymes. We have to mix up enzymes and a vitamin mixture everytime

he wants to eat anything. I think I have a pill mixing callous on

finger, hee hee.

Ok I have not tried this but...

A lady on another site said she uses a 'pill shooter'. You buy them

at Petsmart. (I used one with a cat I used to have.)Anyways, she said

it took 3 days of trying, but now her daughter has her(the mom) shoot

the pill into the back of her mouth & the little girl (she's 3 years

old) chases it with juice.

I know this sounds awful, so don't yell at me. I HAVE NOT DONE THIS

WITH MY CHILD.

Don't know if this will help but I taught my two boys' (6 & 3 at the

time) to swallow a pill by acting like a big old chicken! They loved

it thought it was a great game, they throw back their heads and gulp,

gulp, gulp! (I do have country boys')

Both of my children have had this problem for Angel we used to have to put

her pills in a banana or ice creams you know something soft and sticky that she

would find a way to eat and vala she could take the pill and not even know it.

She has no problem with that now and we no longer have to put a pill in

treats for her to be able to swallow it. For Rebekah we tried apple sauce but

the

nurse then told her to get a big gulp of water slip the pill in her mouth turn

her head up and swallow lol Becky thought it was magic and now she can easliy

take pills too. If all else fails I would just crush it and put it in a small

protion of something yummy.

This may sound really silly, but it's how I take all my pills even as

an adult. In one hand I have glass with something to drink (or if you

don't drink from a glass without spilling a cup with a lid and a

straw.) In the other hand I take the pill pinched between my thumb

and the finger next to it (or just balance the pill on the finger

next to the thumb.) I place the pill in the back of my throat -near

that little flap by the back of the tongue, then I leave the pill

there, remove my finger(s), and quickly take a drink from a glass or

even a sip from a straw , and the pill gets washed down the throat

easily. It's kind of an odd way, my husband makes fun of me every

time I have to take multiple pill because I do them one at a time the

same way, but it's pretty easy to teach where the pill goes (just

slowly push your finger back along your tongue until you touch that

flap, then you know where to put the pill) they can practice without

the pill, anyway -works for me. I guess it's important to note that

you aren't trying to gag yourself, don't arc to high or stick your

finger down your throat, but go slow along the tongue to the little

flap and you won't gag. Anyway, I thought it was worth mentioning,

good luck with the pills.
