Guest guest
My 12 year old really needs to have kefir in his diet and I had to be real sneaky.... I make him a smoothie. I take 3-4 frozen strawberries, 2-3 ice cubes, one banana, and the kefir. I also add one scoop of Arbonne's orange fiber drink. (He needs the fiber and it has stevia so it also sweetens it. You could add a tiny scoop of frozen orange juice if you wanted. I mix it all in my blender and he ASKS for his smoothie! :- O/T Kefir Taste I was wondering if there are any Kefir fans here. I really like Kombucha, but I started kefir a few weeks ago, and the taste does not agree with me. Its so sour. I tried to ferment it less, even only 12 hours but I still don't like it. Can you give me any tips on how you mix it and drink it? I tried mixing it with maple syrup, but I still found it had an aftertaste. Thanks. I mix 1-2 bannanas , a can of pineapple , a can of coconut milk and a splash of OJ and put it all in the blender. I get the kefir that is good for me and also fruits. Guest guest
Melody, I too just started drinking homemade Kefir a couple of weeks ago. I mix frozen strawberries or sweet dark cherries, a real vanilla extract, some raw sugar and (as strange as this may sound) a dash of salt, blended with my hand blender. Kind of like ice cream starter now that I read it written out. I just started mixing to taste. I fight not to drink more than a cup a day now. I read somewhere about people gaining weight drinking kefir and I don’t need to do that at all. As far as the tartness, you might want to check the ratio of grains to milk. I have gotten mine to be very mild with a 24 hour ferment using about 1/4 cup of grains to about 2 quarts of organic whole milk. This was after about a week of not having anything I could drink without a ton of sugar, thus destroying the healthy aspect of drinking it. In the beginning I also threw in a little vanilla soy milk. Hope this gives you an idea for what you might like. ~ Ana MarÃa From: kombucha tea [mailto:kombucha tea ] On Behalf Of melody Sent: Friday, December 14, 2007 3:34 PM kombucha tea Subject: Re: O/T Kefir Taste > > I was wondering if there are any Kefir fans here. Guest guest
My understanding is that the packets will kefir milk but will not propogate milk kefir grains. Which is why you need the extra packets to be able to continue making the beverage. Guest guest
Virginia, Kefir can be described as tart or even sour, but it should never have an aftertaste. When this happens most likely your grains have become unbalanced on the yeast side. Remedy- rest them in a Plain yogurt ( Live culture type not pasteurized) for at least 24 hours in the fridge. Then restart your kefir cycle. This should rebalance the yeast/bacteria ratio and give you a really nice tasting kefir. In the beginning you will most likely want to sweeten the kefir with your choice of fruits, stevia, maple syrup, or any other sweetener of your choosing. As time goes on you will find you need less and less of the sweeteners as your tastebuds get used to the sour taste. zoe > I was wondering if there are any Kefir fans here. Guest guest
My husband doesn't like kefir, either. He says it tastes like " baby puke " . I like it, though. When I used to make it, I'd double ferment it until it was slightly fizzy and very tart. -Patty > > I was wondering if there are any Kefir fans here. Guest guest
Thank you for that. I have been trying to get grains from kefir made from the " kit " and scratched my head over why I couldn't. So I will be ordering some real grains soon.
