Guest guest
Like anywhere, Texas school districts and individual schools vary tremendously -- some are great and others not so great. People's opinions of them also vary depending on what they are specifically wanting for their child. I've heard really good things about Irving, and Plano ISDs in the DFW area plus I'm sure there are others that can be helpful. If you want to homeschool, Texas is absolutely one of the best states to do so since they require no registration, paperwork or jumping through hoops and harrassment like some other states. There are also many active homeschool groups offering a variety of educational and social experiences. Unfortunately, state mental health services vary greatly from county to county. Of the ones we've lived in, seemed to be the least helpful while Tarrant was the most helpful. To determine which services your kids would qualify for, you'll need to contact the county's MHMR (in the phone book under Health & Human Services MHMR) and request a service coordinator. You'll need to be here before you do that and it does take awhile to get into the system. Their funding has been cut a lot lately but they do offer an In-Home & Family Support grant of up to $2600/year for therapy and treatments along with a one-time grant of up to $2600/yr for equipment plus sometimes you can get respite help and other services through the " essential services " branch. Medical-wise, the doctors helping autistic children tend to be mostly in the DFW area with a few others in San . Gaylen

Guest guest
We have two autistic children, aged 1.5 and 3.5 years. We don't know for sure where (what county) we will be living, and we hope that someone will give us a basic overview of what we can expect in the way of services from the state. Is any part of the state better equipped to help my family than another? HELP!
Guest guest
This website is part of the Texas Education Agency and will give you information about different school districts and how they are rated. Of course, you will still want info from individuals in the area. But you will need to narrow your search down. Texas is a big state. I can tell you that we are in the Coppell ISD and have been here for over 17 years. We are in Dallas County in the very northwest corner of the county. We have numerous Blue Ribbon / Exceptionally Recognized schools and I work closely with the Sped Director for the ISD and that has made a difference. Narrow down some likely areas that you might be moving and then we can offer more info. http://askted.tea.state.tx.us/org-bin/menus/ORG_MAIN_B Amy " I don't suffer from stress.....I'm a carrier! Guest guest
for the 1.5 year old get a hold of ECI (Early Childhood Intervntion) in my experience with them they where the best people I have worked with so far... and the 3.5 you get into a PPCD program in public school... my experience with these are they suck, however at that age they are only like 3 1/2 hours and it gives them interaction and gives you a slight break during the day and you do get free testing for your child... I have always been very straped for money and have had to do everything based on what the insurance would cover so I am not really any help with any private schools or any therapies outside the typical medical field... What area are you moving to??? Good Luck, CHristie > We have two autistic children, aged 1.5 and 3.5 years. I have talked to several psychologists, pedi's, therapists.. Everytime I mention my son goes to IISD they tell me how wonderful Irving is, and I have to agree. The staff at my son's school has worked one on one with me and my son to make sure we are both comfortable and they are incredibly open with their communication. We thought about moving away (to a home of our own away from MIL) but I can't stand the thought of enrolling Ethan in a school where we might have a hard time with services. We decided to stay-solely for the schools! Just my two cents. Irving rules! > a Mama to Ethan (6 1/2-AS) and Willow (3)
