Carol SadlerSpecial Education Consultant/AdvocateCarolSadler@...www.IEPadvocate4You.com Social Skills Classes Here is some information about social skills classes. Kellie Hetzel and her company, Aurora Strategies, are truly making a difference in the lives of disabled children. I highly recommend her and recommend that you advocate for your school system to provide for the cost of the program, if your child needs it. I am finding school systems are giving lip service to developing social skills and executive functioning skills. Chris www.aurorastrategies.com 125 mont Avenue, Suite 450, Decatur, Georgia, 30030 Phone 404.377.8882 Fax 404.377.8825 Aurora Strategies provides innovative and scientifically valid programs for rapid and significant improvement of cognitive functioning, physical performance, social skills, and academic and communicative success. We achieve this mission by addressing each client’s unique strengths and challenges through utilization of state-of-the-art therapeutic, educational, and physical training programs, advancing everyone we serve toward personal success. Vision Quest: Building Blocks for Social Success The Vision Quest classes at Aurora Strategies are designed around 8 week curriculum blocks. Each block emphasizes 2 or 3 general social skills related to brain-based performance, and although we anticipate that most children will proceed through the entire curriculum, the schedule is flexible enough to allow families to take a break or omit a course should their child not need a particular component. Each class meets twice per week with accompanying fun and easy homework activities. Courses specifically address age appropriate needs and are designed and customized based on the individual and group profile. Students are grouped based on age and social development as well as previous class participation. Winter Class: Making Friends / Building Emotional Intelligence What are the rules of being a good friend? For most of us, the rules include being able to cooperate and play fairly. This group, therefore, concentrates on skills related to proximity (staying in or appropriately defending our personal space), developing skills for thinking of others first when having a conversation and playing, conversation starters and ways to keep a conversation going, as well as using good coping skills when challenged by social situations. Emotional Intelligence is exhibited by the ability to acknowledge and value feelings in ourselves and others and to appropriately respond to them.
