Just a few words on the schools in CA for autism,

and a bit of information I would like to share.

If anyone is wanting to move there cost/etc...

Sacramento is probably your best bet, as there

are at least 5-8 private autism schools, I say 5-8

because of the broad range of autism and the

best placement for each child is so different.

The school distr. ( 3-4) usually refer the child

immediately, for a private setting, and have

the parent chose which one, or the closest

to home.

What are those distr.'s? Sacramento Unified,

Elk Grove Unified, and Folsom Unified distr.

These 3 will not fight about the issue of NPS.

There are some really good distr. up farther

north of Sacramento, but I don't have enough

feed back on them to comment.

One to avoid is San , ---good distr. only if your

child doesn't have a disability

The 3 listed distr. will pay for it, usually a year around

program, with a Christmas break and summer

break ( 1-2 weeks off, depending on the school).

Also included with the private school, will be of course, ABA,

OT, speech, adaptive PE, and many of the public

schools provide transportation to the NPS if you

chose that service.

Also if your child is under 6 yrs old, you receive

ABA therapist in your home from the school distr.

and the Regional Center. The Regional Center ( Alta)

offers services after school for all age groups,

respite, ABA therapist, and a long list of services.

Such as OT, PT, Diagnose evaluation's, diapers,

etc.... Usually a parent can expect to get

these services within 3-4 months, once the

diagnosis of autism has been established.

So its basically a wrap around services for your

child once the autism diagnose has been established.

Also there is the New facility called

the M.I.N.D. Inst. all geared towards treatments

and research on autism. They are listed on the Web

if you wanted extensive testing done there.

The autism community is a large strong

group with a voice, esp since Sacramento is

the capitol. They are usually at mass gatherings

there for any improvements for the autism community.

There is also a F.E.A.T. book of service providers

therapist, schools, Dr's, and parent contact's in

a book they put out each year and update.

I know sad to say, but there are actually other states worse

than TX.

CA. ranked highest in Education, teacher pay, but

the article I read didn't mention sp. ed.

If you think about it, ABA Lovas treatment started in Los Angeles

back in the early 80's. So they had a jump on autism and tried

to do something about it.

I live in San , but, sorry, I don't know anything about

the schools or other services. In addition to other ideas,

you can contact:

--Parents Helping Parents, in Santa Clara (about short way

north, close to San ). Their website is either www.php.org

or www.php.com This is an organization that helps parents

with kids with any kind of disability. They may be able to

help you find information. (Also has lots of support groups,

a library, speakers, etc.)

--this is a very small list, but is Bay Area focused:

bayareaprekasd/

I don't know how many parents from San or South Bay,

but it **may** still help to ask there too. (It covers

the entire Bay Area....) But it is a

small list, so you may not get much response.

As for the cost of living, housing is very expensive.

I also think my car insurance is high, but I don't know

what that is like in Texas. Lots of things should cost

about the same.

best wishes,

Moria
