Guest guest
Tell us what part of Georgia you are in. There is a lot you can do, but knowing what resources are near you would be helpful. Guest guest
-Hi, Ana. I'm new to this particular group, but my daughter is now nine years old. I remember the stage you are in soooo well. It was scary. But you can help her. My dd was diagnosed at 27 months, but I knew at 20 months, and read everything i could. i was a woman obsessed with curing my child. First read as much as you can...libraries around here share books, so go and get some. But take it slow. There is a lot of information out there. Things you can do to help her with the meltdowns, headbanging, etc. I stopped most of the aggressive or self abusive behaviors by redirecting her to: a mattress that was for jumping only....any old mattress will do! Your OT can tell you why this can help:0)... offering playdough, dough and water to mix together, finger paints...oh yes, it may be messy, but you will be able to use these to your advantage, and it is allowing her sensory system something to concentrate on processing. A crash pad...ie, a bunch of pillows, of different textures and fillings, to help her learn to regulate her behavior in a more appropriate way....make a game of it once the innappropriate behavior subsides....she'll learn to associate the end of her innappropriate behaviors with playing, and eventually she may be able to identify when she needs to play. if shes a climber(or becomes one)designate one safe climbing place, and redirect her to it every time she climbs inappropriately. redirection is when she begins biting, hitting, headbanging, you take her to another activity after telling her no....adopt a stern " no " voice now, and use it every time she begins one of those behaviors...you may have to carry her at first... " no " was my daughters first word, lol...but i'm glad, because she has never been injured in my care:0). when we started, i was lost, but it becomes like second nature...engage her always when you hand her something, naming the item, and if you can make cards from magazine pictures, use them.....i feel like my daughter didnt know all that noise of us speaking was purposeful, but when i made an effort to show purpose she began understanding words...but i spoke slow, and in one word sentences as much as possible...i also used sign, applied her hand to my mouth so she could feel the word i was saying, pictures of course....once she can communicate, the tantrums will slow, and when she has areas that she can use to integrate her sensory system (sensory integration...i cannot explain it, but your browser will show you where to find it), she will not feel the need to hit, bite,etc....i think these things are the only way they know to communicate thier frustration, but when we help them learn other ways to cope, and continue to insist that we will not allow that behavior, because we love them, it helps them. Sensitivity to touch made my hugs with my daughter backwards for years, but i often hugged her tightly backwards, arms wrapped around her during these moments of what seems like rage to most, and she learned to take comfort in this...she hugs now, just to hug! I know what you needed was something you could start like right now, so i hope this helped! hugs, scarlett ps....have you had a neurologist do a fragileX test? It is a chromosome test. -- In autism , " Ana bisciaio " <ana_bisciaio@y...> wrote: > > Hi everyone.I am new to this group and autism.I have a two year old > little girl that was recently diagnosed with autistic disorder two > weeks ago.Her developmental pediatrician told me that she scored a 46 > on the CHAT test. She is also taking clonidine to help her sleep at > night. My daughter is in the babies cant wait program. Are there any > other recourses in ga for children with this disability?I am a single > mom so it is a little bit hard for me financially.I did apply for ssi > for her 3 months ago,and I am still waiting. She has an ot,special > instructor.Should I take her to A PHSYCOLOGIST?If anyone can give me > any advice I would deeply appreciate it.Also,I need advice on how to > deal with her aggressive behaviors,She has frequent meltdowns and > headbanging and biting episodes. She is not talking yet,at least on > her own.
