I am looking for a good doctor to help with my 10 year old son's

aggressive behavior. We have Medicaid. I need help fast.

For both moms:

What type of doctor are you looking for? A holistic doctor that

works with non-traditional medicine, a psychologist trained in

behavior techniques or someone like a neurologist that looks at EEGs

and is willing to try meds like anti-seizure meds or SSRIs? How far

are you able to travel - e.g. Could you travel all the way to San

or Austin?

What did you see as positive things when you started these meds -

individually or as the whole group of meds? I am not sure of the

experiences of some of the other parents on the list but I do know

that some parents I know personally have trouble after kids have been

a med for a while. It is as if in the beginning it is good and then

behaviors start increase because the body starts handling the

medications differently. I have wondered where this comes from. Is

it related to the inability to process these meds over time - the

meds causing changes in: liver function, gut problems, neurological

reactions, an increase in abnormal brain activity in certain areas

like the temporal lobe, sleep variations, etc.. ? It can just be so

hard to get the right combination of meds with or without other

interventions. Is the Trileptal helping at all with the seizures -

you just mentioned the Zonegran for the seizures- I have heard some

good things about it for seizures. Have you tried taking away

(decreasing the dose until down at zero) for either Paxil or

Risperdal or trying a different drug for mood/behavior/anxiety? I

can tell you are trying hard and hopefully we can help find someone

with some experience and sound knowledge. Feel free to contact me

off list for San people if you don't have success with ones

close to you. Hang in there - I know this is so hard.

I have lived through this myself (and continue to periodically) with a

highly aggressive child who is now unfortunately as big as I am.

My first suggestion is to look into drug interactions....sometimes the

medications interact with each other in strange ways, especially with our

kids. Many times doctors that do not specialize in kids with autism or have

a good deal of experience medicating kids with autism do not realize that

our children react differently to medications, including dosage levels (I

think you can find a fair amount of literature that supports treating our

children with less of most drugs than doctors would treat other children

with the same medications).

Either a psychiatrist or developmental pediatrician with extensive

experience with ASDs is likely your best bet for right now. First you have

to deal with what you already have...meds...before you move on to something

else.

The other suggestion I have is to bring in a BCBA....board certified

behavior analyst...to perform a functional analysis of his behavior. If it

is not medication related, then it is likely environment related, and this

can be ascertained by a BCBA. The University of North Texas has an applied

behavior analysis department, and has also developed the BATTS program that

I think you can contact to possibly arrange for someone to come out to the

school and your home to give you help.

I hope this is helpful, and I know firsthand how difficult the situation can

get...I will keep your family in my thoughts.
