Guest guest
Yes, tea itself can be a diuretic. There is the school of thought that believes all caffeine is diuretic, and the other school that believes diuretic effects are seen only after consumption of 300mg of caffeine or more. (that would be at least 6 cups of tea black tea; more if green, white or oolong) The caffeine in black tea is roughly half that of coffee. (Green tea roughly half that of black tea, white tea even less) There are herbal tisanes that are caffeine-free and calorie-free that can deliver antioxidant-rich hydration to anyone looking for something more fulfilling than water. Rooibos, for example, is only a mild diuretic. This mild initial diuretic effect is actually detoxifying your system. It has three to eight times (some folks say 50 times... but 3-8 times is good enough for me!) the antioxidant power of green tea, is soothing to your digestive system, is a bronchodilator to open your air sacs and help provide more oxygen to your bloodstream and is mineral-rich. It's pure and naturally organic (grows as a hardy weed, no chemicals required!), it's calorie-free, has anti-spasmodic properties and boosts your immune system. Has a somewhat sweet flavor naturally. Want it sweeter? Brew a little stevia with your leaves (but not with your Kombucha ... I think Kombucha needs the actual sugar to interact with the bacteria and yeast) A gallon of iced rooibos can be made for the same price as the retail value of two 20oz bottles of bottled iced tea. I personally have trouble drinking my daily minimum requirement of water unless it is ice cold from beginning to end. I don't drink my home tap water because it is too heavily chlorinated. I drink spring water from a known local source. I don't drink bottled water because I don't know where the water came from and the plastic bottles are not usually returnable, and very rarely properly recycled. It takes 100 million gallons of oil annually to produce those bottles -- enough to fuel more than 100,000 cars for a year.I've actually had my doctor tell me keep drinking the water like I do because it's doing a great job keeping me hydrated ... and I tell him the secret isn't water -- it's rooibos. www.bodybuilding.com also lists rooibos as a reasonable means of hydration. http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/lisamarie1.htm Hope this helps! donnalynn, teasmith www.sensibiliteason line.com Retail shop with over 450 teas/over 300 organic teas Not all teas are listed on the website... email your snail mail address to teasmith@sensibilit easonline. com to receive a full list. 10% discount on total SensibiliTeas purchase to anyone in this group! " For hydrating the body, the ONLY thing that works is water. Real water. Not water with any additives. Just plain water. And specifically, any drink that contains any caffeine, which is a diuretic, contributes to general dehydration. See www.bodybuilding. com : It is difficult for the body to get water from any other source than water itself. Soft drinks and alcohol steal tremendous amounts of water from the body. Other beverages such as coffee and tea are diuretics therefore stealing precious water from the body. http://www.downtoea rth.org/healthti p/get_your_ fill_water. htm -- this article is short and very good on what our bodies need for hydration.
