Guest guest
Joanie,Usually someone who has been abused and abandoned at such an early age will have emotional drive issues that complicate development--no matter how good the following environment--as many parents of RAD kids can attest. F7 is Broca's area, so it is responsible for speech, but problems between Wernicke's area (CP5) and Broca's or emotional considerations can also have an effect on speech. You could try training F7F8 or taking a look at the two sites in an assessment segment and seeing what patterns are present there. Guest guest
Hi Joanie,I've developed a standard protocol for speech issues (called 's protocol ) since 2003 with great results, even kids with mutism (muteness) now talk.1) Train T3-F7 and T4-F8 in the same session but separated, let's say 12 min one side, 10 min the other side with at least 3Hz differencial between rewarding band (e.g. 13-16 left, 10-13 right). Need to review kid's arousal to set the proper frequencies and time. 10 sessions2) Then train F7-F8 x 20 minutes x 5 sessions3) Train T3-P3 and T4-P4 as you did the first protocol. x 5 sessions.Repeat this cycle until you get the results you are looking for. If you do this for an extended period of time (no less than 3 months), you may see fine results. Please keep me posted with your progress.Hope this helps ;)JRFrom: pvdtlc <pvdtlc@...> Sent: Thu, October 21, 2010 11:46:19 PMSubject: Re: 6 year speech problems Joanie,Usually someone who has been abused and abandoned at such an early age will have emotional drive issues that complicate development--no matter how good the following environment--as many parents of RAD kids can attest. Guest guest
Am most appreciative for sharing your protocols for speech issues. I was hoping you could answer some questions about this: 1) What is the significance in choosing to train the left and right sides for different length of time? 12min. on one side, 10 on the other? 2) Why the 3 Hz differential? 3) What should we be rewarding on say the right side? SMR? then that would be a beta reward on left side? 4) what are we inhibiting...both high and low frequencies...should we do assessment to see activity first or is there a standard protocol? Etc...always inhibiting lows and highs. Guest guest
Hi , thanks for sharing that information with us. Just one question. What do you reward at F7-F8? When you get to temporal-parietal bipolar montage, do you again reward 13-16 left and 10-13 right? Guest guest
Dear Joanie & Natja,As I mentioned in my prior email, all will depends on the person's arousal. E.g. If the person is overarusal will work better with lower frequencies and more right side training than left. And th opposite applies for an underarousal person. The 3 or 4 Hz differencial between hemispheres is because the left one should be faster than the right one.SMR is a rhythm only at central strip, so you may not reward SMR anywhere else because it is not SMR, could be LoBeta or the reward frequency that best suit to that person, depending on the arousal.I always recommend an assessment prior any training, but with this specific case and bipolar montages is kind of difficult to determine by a regular assessment, so I relay on my experience and some data from the assessment (e.g. F7, P3, etc values and ratios)I normally inhibit high and low frequencies (Delta/Theta -2-5Hz & HiBeta -23-38Hz) because I'm use to use the old Othmer/EEGSpectrum protocols for these cases. And always I got good to awesome results, so why change?Hope this helps and clarify JRFrom: Joanie Brown <ckerftruth@...> Sent: Sun, October 24, 2010 1:43:54 AMSubject: RE: 6 year speech problems Am most appreciative for sharing your protocols for speech issues. Guest guest
Thank you , I will try implementing this starting next week. I think I will attempt to run an assessment on a few choice sites first. We opted not to do that in the beginning because she was so young, but she does have the capacity to sit still and follow instruction so I think we will try the assess. Thanks again for your input. I do have one other question. You mentioned that you do inhibit low and high frequencies, however, I am assuming that when you are dealing with speech issues that it is mostly kids, and young kids like this little girls, do you adjust those high/ low ranges at all to accommodate age? what would you anticipate for a girl age 6? I know that the younger they are that it tends to slide all the ranges down quite a bit, and her brain, I believe is underdeveloped due to the neglect she suffered as a young baby...MOM would not even pick her up just kept her in a carrier/car seat / crib all the time...she would not even pick her up to feed her. We have tried to determine her pk alpha and SMR...but it has been a real challenge...so again. based on your experience with this population, what do you anticipate say her pk alpha to be or SMR range? Thanks again for all your help!! Guest guest
Joanie, try to find and download "Tom and Jerry" comics on youtube. They are in .flv format, I suppose you have to convert them to mpg or avi format - for playing in bioex video player. In our experiences, every kid becomes strictly involved in these stories - after some time or immediately. The original ones are ingenious for kids (5 to 8 minutes length), much better than the newer ones. When you have found a suited protocol, the rewards should come not too quickly, not too slowly (about a second each reward in the mean). Guest guest
Joanie, addendum: for the auditive rewards, use simple tones like the brainmaster click or similar, suppress the video conversation. Uwe
Guest guest
Hello , all, I am writing on this post again because the issue at hand now for this little girl with speech problems is that she does not want to sit through any of the training now. AT first she was thrilled with the pacman and would watch a little video for awhile but she is completely uninterested in any of it now. What do you do with young clients to keep them engaged and what specific designs would you use, (I am thinking that you might use something different in the TLC lineup? Her mother is really on board with continuing therapy but the little girl wants to quite after 10 minutes!! HELP! Guest guest
With Bioexplorer, you can use any DVD. I like the tv series like Full House. Also, I also use BX Adapter and use it with Netflix. This way, we can choose anything for anyone:)Connie Re: Re: 6 year speech problems Joanie, try to find and download "Tom and Jerry" comics on youtube. Guest guest
Hi Joan,Bipolar montage is when you place the electrodes in a site where beneath each head lead electrode has EEG signal (activity). Guest guest
HI , Okay...so I want to make sure that I am understanding how to apply your speech protocol. For the first round T3-F7 am I going to place the active electrode #1, for us it's the red electrode, place that at T3 and then the other active electrode (brown one) at F7? Or do I place the active electrode at T3 and the left reference electrode at F7? If the second one is the correct placement, then why would we raise beta at the temporals of a kid who already has excess beta in his temporals, which would be the case for this particular kid that we are wanting to use this on. I am sorry to keep asking about this, but I just want to be sure that I am implementing this correctly. Thank you in advance for all your help! And happy holidays to you! Guest guest
Hi Joan,When we're using bipolar montages (e.g. F7-T3) we are comparing or measuring the difference between those two sites where the electrodes are located. Beneath each electrode, active and reference (the color of the electrode really doesn't matter, you have to make sure where is connected each one) you will find electrical activity (EEG).If the person or the kid has high percentage of Beta & /or HiBeta at Temporals, you may be training indirectly with this protocol, because the design is set to decrease (inhibit) the difference in the HiBeta range (23-38Hz). Also, when you reward a specific frequency range in a bipolar montage you will be increasing the difference of that specific range between those two site where the electrodes are located. Place the active electrode of channel 1 at T3 and the reference of same channel 1 at F7. If you set in reverse order, active at F7 and reference at T3 it will work just find, because remember you are training the difference between those two points.Hope this help!Merry Xmas JRFrom: Joan <ckerftruth@...> Sent: Thu, December 23, 2010 2:34:07 AMSubject: Re: 6 year speech problems HI , Okay...so I want to make sure that I am understanding how to apply your speech protocol.
