Another T&A success story

Hey everyone - I wanted to put out a post of encouragement for any families

considering tonsillectomy. Our daughter Rowan had the T & A surgery last July,

2008, when she was five years old after several years of fevering cycles.

Prednisone worked for her initially but she wound up cycling with fevers every

couple of weeks after a while. It was extremely frustrating and upsetting. We

had the genetic testing which ruled out syndromes other than .

Rowan did start running a fever the day of the surgery, which was

nerve-wracking. We gave her a dose of prednisone in the morning when we saw she

started to spike, and they went ahead with the surgery. It went smoothly, but

was definitely a full two week recovery with very sore throat. It was the best

decision we could have made. She has had a couple of fevers since then,

including one two months after surgery to the day. The most recent one was

February, 2009. Both times, the fever lasted only 24 hours, was moderate (101),

and was controllable with children's motrin only. She's so much healthier and

did not miss a day of school this year due to illness! We can now make plans

without worrying about where things fall on a fever cycle. The discomfort of

the surgery was well worth it. Best wishes to all of you, I know it's an

individual and difficult decision but wanted to pass along our experience.

Also, there's a pretty good children's book called " Goodbye Tonsils " that we

used to help Rowan prepare for the surgery.

Regards,

Margie
