Partial T&A

Hi all,

We met with the ENT regarding a T & A. I went in hopeful that we'd have

a surgery date scheduled, but we were told that we're on hold as my

son has clotting issues that need to be addressed. One is a confirmed

factor deficiency and the other we're re-testing to confirm the

severity. For the most part he's not severe enough that we'd notice on

a regular basis, but seeing that the T & A is prone to bleeding

complications they take this very seriously.

Our ENT said that with if he does prove positive for the one condition

then they won't do a T & A on those kids. He mentioned 2 cases his

colleague worked on that only did partial T & As to eliminate periodic

fevers. Apparently they remove the adenoids and all but 10% of the

tonsils. This remaining 10% is the part particularly prone to bleeding

issues due to muscle involvement. Curious if anyone else has heard of

this or had a partial. He seemed to indicate those were the only 2

cases so there's really no testing to see the effectiveness, but...

may be our only option. One the positive those 2 children had success

but as we know that's not a large enough population.

To say we're disappointed is an understatement! My son has had severe

tonsil involvement in at least the past 6 episodes and we're now

thinking all of them. We were SO hopeful that the T & A would be our

cure all! Never a dull moment!

Best,

Vivian

Vivian,

I don't have an answer for you - but I certainly hope all works out with

the blood clotting testing.

I do know that there were a lot of posts about 9-12 months ago on

partial T & A... you might look in the archives to see what was there and

find some specific names of folks.

Wishing you luck!
