Hi Jenn

At first our pediatrician was not aware of but we gave him articles we

found and he familiarized himself. After we told him he was diagnosed with this

by an ID doctor, our pediatrician contacted him and they spoke. We told our ped

we wanted a T & A and our ped along with our ID supported our decision. Our ped

recommended an ENT and told us if the ENT would not want to do it he would call

him. We didnt want to waste our time going for consultations so before we went

we faxed articles and studies. Once we got there, the doc looked at our son,

talked to us and scheduled the T & A.

I think we as parents need to be advocates for our children. My husband was a

little pushy and made sure the doctors knew we were serious with our decision

and that we felt this is the next step. Thank goodness our ped and ID want the

best for Nikitas and support our decision!

Our case was a little different - our daughter's ear tube fell out.

Within a month she had a bad ear infection. We inquired if her standard

ENT knew anything of . We went to the ENT on a " premise " of

wanting to do an ear-tube recheck. The nurses there seemed very

knowledgeable on - completely knew what we were talking about when

we mentioned fevers. He came in and said, " You're really here to talk

about aren't you? " I said, " well... yes, that and we needed to

come in for a re-check. " We had a good 15 minute conversation on the

pros/cons, etc. When asked how many episodes Dani had in the past 6

months, I presented him the chart and said - " She's had 17 episodes in

14 months. " He immediately said, " clear case to do the T & A " .

We then scheduled a consultation with our Pediatrician, and he

understood our desires and wrote up a recommendation that we pursue

discussing T & A with ENT and sent the same letter off to our

Immunologist. He also explained that Pediatricians and Immunologists

are trained to avoid surgery - therefore, many of them are resistant.

But my Pediatrician is a bit of an exception when it comes to and

has about 6 patients now (Dani was his 4th case). He said he is

seeing the pendulum swing towards pro-T & A.

I asked both doctors, " if it were your child what would you do? " Both

clearly and quickly said they would do the T & A.

Because of the " throat involvement " , Insurance had no problem paying for

it (but we are not on an HMO and don't need referrals) {Please don't

misunderstand, our insurance is pretty bad - but just a different

" Health Fund " arrangement}.

Also note that when Dani did have the T & A they appeared relatively

normal - not terribly in bad shape as we had expected.

She is now almost 9 months fever-free.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Ginger
