Guest guest
Hi, I'm Hollie, a RN mommy to 3 kids, one of whom I'm concerned may have . He is 5 years old now and I have been recording fevers for 2 years now. And he was having them for probably a year before that(I just thought oh he's still young and kids catch a lot of colds/viruses). Since I have been recording his fevers I've noticed he gets them every 4-7 weeks. In 2008 he has had them pretty much every 4 weeks. His temps don't get as high as most report though, he gets from 101.5-103.2 and usually about 102. His only symptoms during his fevers are headache and sore throat. He is usually fairly well during the fevers, with motrin or tylenol you'd never know he was sick except for a mild fatigue. His breath is bad during these episodes and his lymph nodes in his neck get large. He has no respiratory symptoms during these. None of his siblings ever get sick from him, he's got a 7 yr old and 2 yr old sister. So, every 4-7 weeks, usually 4 we have fever, headache, sore throat. He's had many strep cultures that have all been negative. In between fevers he's healthy and fine. A couple of times when I've taken him in they said he had pus on the tonsils once and a white spot on the tonsil another time. I've never looked in his mouth for blisters. He has had a couple breaks from the fever, the last one was 4 months bw fever and that was a year ago. Today we went to the ped and I took with me my documentation on his fevers and also a couple journal articles about PFAP. The ped read them and said it's very possible that he has PFAP but that he's not too worried about it. He said he thought that the conservative approach was best right now but would be happy to prescribe tagamet or consider tonsillectomy if this continues on quite a bit longer. I declined tagamet and opted to just continue documenting fevers. He didn't want to run any blood work and since there doesn't seem to be a diagnostic test for I was happy with that. He did get a cbc in July with one of his fevers and the white count was 12,000. Everything else was fine except he was borderline anemic. He isn't a sick child and can get through the episodes fairly easily as long as I give him the fever reducers. I hate that he has to deal with not feeling well so much though. But I don't want to put him through a barrage of testing when all in all he's pretty healthy and happy. I would like to know if he has though so I can do further research on how to help him and if this is an immune system issue or not. It's been so frustrating these past 3 years telling the doc that he gets fevers all the time and being shrugged off. I'm just happy to find that there is something like that can have no long term consequences. You start wondering what major illness your child has when they run fevers so often. Thanks for listening, Hollie Thanks for listening.
