How have you conquered hypertension ? I am hypertensive 220/180 before treatment(116/78 on treatment). I used Diovan before and it gave me no side effects. Remember they are possible side effects not what actually will happen to you. Hypertension is NOT in your HEAD. You are hypertensive due to genetics it runs in your family. It runs in mine. I am small 5'7" 140 lbs so I am not obese but its genetic. If you stop your meds you run the risk of heart attack (oh those are fun when you can't breathe and it feels as if someone is ripping your heart out, I have had 5 heart attacks so far) Bloody noses, blood vessels breaking in your eyes where you get to see the world thru the color pink. I have been on meds for over 15 years and I have managed it the best I can. I would NEVER think of stopping my meds even though I take 4 pills a day for hypertension one every 6 hours. It sure beats the alternative of death. And the side effects are not nasty they have never given me any side effects other than acting as a diuretic which I managed fine. Guest guest
Hypertension is a major issue for all with HIV, not just you. As people age they are more likely to develop hypertension. People with HIV may be more likely to develop hypertension. Hypertension is associated with lipids, glucose, diabetes, stress, and perhaps certain ARTs. I have hypertension, so I take diovan, a leading anti-hypertensive. Exercise & diet help hypertension. You have to be careful about renal function as well. Its all tied in with heart disease as well. Guest guest
Some forms of hypertension are hereditary / physiologic and run in families. Lifestyle can always hel,p but not always enough to meet currrent AHA recommendations. There are a number of different pharmacologic approaches to hypertension, if you do have problems with this medication. Personally, I take the medication, live my life, I don't stress about being hypertensive, or add yet another activity to my already burgeoning healthcare regimen. Life is good - enjoy it and don't stress. If you read the inserts with all medications and take them all to heart, you would never take anything. Sanford Sanford M. Guest guest
I don't know what side-effects of Diovan caught your attention, but the side-effects of Diovan all occurred at a comparable rate in those people taking a placebo. I take Benicar, a virtually identical drug, which is also an Angiotension-2 Receptor Blocker (ARB). If your blood pressure drops quickly, you may temporarily experience some dizziness upon standing from a seated position, but it would be very surprising if you experienced any other symptoms from an ARB. Highly elevated blood pressure as you age used to be considered normal many decades ago. But controlling blood pressure has been found to reduce the incidence of death and heart disease, so the current practice is to attempt to maintain a normal bood pressure with drugs as a person ages. >> > I recently found out during a routine doctors visit that my blood pressure is high (160/100). > He told me it "just happens" at your age (50) and I MUST get it under control or I could die. > After facing HIV all these years I find I have a new, urgent and potentially more lethal > challenge. > As the over 50 population of HIV'ers grows so do the diseases of the heart and cardio-> vascular system.
