Guest guest
I went to Dr. Serra 15 months ago and had my face filled. It was a positive experience. I still like my face very much and it has lifted my confidence level to the sky. The PMMA is not hard although you can tell if you feel hard enough that its been filled. Its not anything that is visual. Someone running their hands over my face would never know I had it filled. I will go back to Dr. Serra for refilling when needed. I can see where one would be concerned with fillers but I think we have to come back to reality. We all have the virus and it will help us all live a shortened life. The use of PMMA has brought up the quality of my life not the quantity. I can now go anywhere I please and not be ashamed of my looks. The dead look is gone from my face I now look healthy no more hollowing of the cheek or gaunt face of death. PMMA is permanent. That's why I chose it, plus the cost was very inexpensive considering that you are not gouged with American prices in a 3rd world country for 1st class dermatological work. Make your choices and be happy with them. Do not look for more reasons to have more work done. There is a fine line between aesthetically pleasing and obsession. The filling procedure will make you look like a functioning person,it will not make you beautiful unless you were before you got the virus. It is not a magical cure for all your own insecurities and vanities. Be pleased with the change for the sake of being able to go out in public and look normal. I LOVE MY LOOK I am happy with it. I say to anyone that asks go for PMMA its fast and permanent. FRANKAOL now offers free email to everyone. Find out more about what's free from AOL at AOL.com. Guest guest
& Group, I just received comparison photos from Dr. Echaves who has done my Sculptra injections (photos are six sessions apart). He is great at what he does, in my opinion, and I'm pleased with the product. I was able to get the product at no charge from Dermik, so I only had to pay for the injections themselves. I am so happy with the results. I'll never look like I did before the nukes (thank you for that, Zerit and Bristol-Myers Squibb), but I no longer feel like the walking dead. For me, it was worth every penny, and will be for future injections. I hope for the sake of those who can't afford the injections that something changes soon with our current medical system to help you feel a bit more whole and ease the psychological pain this can cause. I'm going to attempt to attach my before and after photos to show the differences in my face. If the photos don't go through to the group, I'll be happy to show them to anyone who is interested; just email me privately. Best of luck to anyone suffering from this - it isn't an easy thing to live with, I know. Guest guest
This discussion raises a corollary issue. This list needs, actually the HIV community needs a list of trusted MD's doing facial reconstruction. I had put up a request some time ago and had put up a request more recently to start a list of the best most trustworthy providers in each city, but the response has been underwhelming. So please, just a quick note with the docs name, products they use and contact info (address, phone) would be of huge help in compiling this list and would be a great way to promote your favorite doc. Please send what info you have to Al @ Albertbenson . com thanks al

Guest guest
I was intrigued by a comment the writer of his post raised when he said " I'll never look like I did before the nukes " . What degree of correction should be expected with the various treatments? Do different products give different results? Are some treatments better for one part of the face then other treatments? Are some treatments better for the problems faced by one person over another (skin color, degree of wasting, etc). Are people generally satisfied by their choices? Do people feel like they wound up looking like themselves again? I have dealt with these issues for the better part of a decade, but only recently realized that not everybody thinks like me (!) nor is everyone's expectations the same as mine. So now after tiring of the sound of my own voice, I'm very interested in hearing about others' expectations. al

Guest guest
OK Al this is how i feel about it. First of all It is not a correction, it is a reconstruction, and it is important to have realistic expectations, no man made devise can give you back what HIV took away. Second, result vary from person to person based on many factors, most importantly how far off was the damage before action was taken, how many treatments you had done, how did you react to the treatments, and even the kind of day your doctor had when he did the treatment has an impact. And of course monetary resources, the better the doctor, the higher the fee,in plastic surgery one pays for the skills. Third, there are area of the face that cannot be reconstructed as well or where all treatment have limited effects on, like the forehead, the temples or under the eyes, again depending on each person, we all get different results. The main result we can get from any available treatment is big cheeks, if looking like Cher is your thing you are in luck. Fourth, the back of your head has lost fat as well, so there will be even more loose skin in the front, and how does that impact the way we look and the reconstruction? Again it all differ from person to person. Fifth we are all getting old while we are doing these treatments, and in my opinion, HIV infected individual age faster (and poorly) then healthy people for many reasons, all derived directly or indirectly from being HIV infected. Sixth, awareness, some people are more aware then others and as my mother used to say , blessed ignorance. Guest guest
I'm wondering if all these questions indicate a certain degree of obsession. I'm also wondering how anyone can answer most of them without having tried several or even all of the available options. I do know that microdroplet silicone significantly improved my appearance when I had it done five years ago. I look better today than I did then, even though I am five years older.
