Guest guest
Infusion of dandelion leaf, 3-4 cups daily. This can also be combined nettles and red raspberry leaf to make an excellent all purpose pregnancy tonic tea. Capsules and extracts are not as effective, though some midwives do recommend milk thistle extract in conjunction with the tea. Guest guest
Hi Becky,Many women have found safe, effective relief with some attention to diet and alternative therapies when pharmaceutical options fail. If your sister feels open to these, they are listed below. Consulting with professionals experienced in these areas (homebirth midwives among them) would be helpful and recommended. Diet suggestions:- Cut out refined and processed foods (white flour, sugar, poor quality fats, etc).- Eat plenty of whole grains, fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, seeds, legumes.- Get enough Essential Fatty Acids. - Make sure she is getting enough water (2-4 qts/day) and salt when its so hot and drinking this much water.Alternative Therapies:- The simplest is taking an oatmeal bath (run the bath water through a sock with rolled oats) or rubbing an oatmeal paste (ground rolled oats mixed with some water) directly on the skin. Or rub itchy skin with oils like sweet almond or coconut oil. - Homeopathy has been very helpful. Apis Melifolia is one that often works. The remedy is specific to the individual, so consulting with a homeopath is highly recommended.- Acupuncture can be very helpful.- Herbs that are recommended for gently cleansing and supporting the liverhave provided amazing results. They are taken as infusions (a tea that is steeped for at least 30 minutes), tinctures, and supplements. These include dandelion root, alfalfa, milk thistle, nettles (incredibly nutritional). They are often quite bitter, mix with honey and red rasberry leaf for flavor if desired. WishGarden Herbs makes a tincture called Liver Strengthener that is often very helpful. It is highly recommended she consult with a trained herbalist. - Essential Oils (use ONLY therapeutic-graded oils; solvents, impurities, and chemical analogs are often found in other types of EOs)... from sacredwindow.com (Ysha Oaks, doula who offers professional training in Ayurveda for the childbearing year): Pregnant Itchy Skin Blend: 2 1/2 Tb. Almond oil 1/2 Tb. jojoba oil 1 Evening Primrose capsule (approx. 10 drops) 1 Vitamin E capsule (approx. 10 drops) 4 drops Tangerine 4 drops Geranium 4 drops Lavender 4 drops Cypress 3 drops Lemon This oil can be used almost daily during pregnancy. Apply it to wet skin after showering, especially on the growing belly. It may help in not having to experience the itch that most mothers speak of, plus it could be beneficial for stretch marks.Wishing your sister relief and health,-------toLabor's Doula Training Workshop is coming to Santa Fe!
