GLACIERLAND RC & D and GRASSWORKS are co-sponsoring this all inclusive workshop will be held from 8:30am – 4:30 pm, Thursday, June 23rd Kiel, WI, Participants will learn about the selection of pigs for pasture or woodlot based systems, aspects of holistic herd health, parasite and disease prevention. The second portion of the workshop will address feeds and feeding, nutrition, and management of these alternative methods of swine production. The afternoon session will not only feature input by an accomplished LOCAL CHEF regarding utilization of the whole hog carcass, but also include pointers and recipes from a Wisconsin PROFESSIONAL MEAT PROCESSOR a skilled pioneer in the art of creating nitrite and MSG-free bacon, sausage and hams. WILL WINTER, herd health and livestock nutrition consultant, is the featured presenter for this dynamic workshop designed to not only inform, but also inspire those pork producers who are either currently raising or considering alternative methods of pork production. A highlight of the day long workshop will be the 1st ANNUAL NATURAL BACON COMPETITION served with other wholesome breakfast snacks, as well as the 1st ANNUAL NATURAL BRAT COMPETITION which will be served as well as a healthy lunch buffet. All participants will cast their ballots after enjoying a meal of delicious pasture produced pork. There will be cash prizes for winners. Workshop participants will take home a NATURAL PORK SYLLABUS filled with valuable ideas, methods and resource materials to assist them in implementing the topics covered in the workshop. Immediately following the workshop participants are invited to Golden Bear Farms, located 1 ½ miles away for a PASTURE WALK with Steve & Marie Deibele, owners, with Will Winter and Sabino Cortez, organic forage. crop and soils consultant, offering ideas and observations.
