Hi Lori,

I am hoping to make some soap over winter. I have a few books here and it

doesn't sound like rocket science but could be interesting! I belong to a

couple of soap making groups on as well. I don't keep up with them too

often but they have wonderful advice from what I have read.

Khati Khalick (may have spelled wrong) does do a soap making workshop. She is

in Wisconsin but just a really nice person. I think her farm is called living

the dream farm. She provides the Co Op in NE Mpls and Stillwater with duckeggs

and was written up in one of the health foodie newspapers in the local area.

Sometimes there are also classes given thru extension service or art shops.

I do know that the right equipment is needed. Stainless and glass containers

and such. Adding things in the right order is also important.

The melt and pour are probably the easiest by the reading I have done, I wanted

to make milk soaps as well as some with lard since I have a ton of that too!

The lye up here is hard to find thanks to the meth heads making it a non-local

item.

I will quit rambling now.

Anyone out there make this stuff or want to? Maybe we can get together and

attempt it?

I would love to get my hands on some local homemade soap with lard! I brought

some back from the fabulous farmers' market at the WP conference. It was from

one of the many Amish farmers there that day, and I got only 2 bars but should

have bought a case (also because it was just $1.90 per bar). I heard several

times from various speakers (including Dr. -McBride) cautioning against

using soaps and detergents on our skin since it disrupts the natural ecology

there. The Amish soap with lard and olive oil feels like the perfect solution.

I have made my own soap, both from lard and from other oils. In fact I just made

some a week ago. I don't have a ton of experience making soap, but the lard soap

came out great. Email me off list if you want. I have a spreadsheet program

that calculates the amount of lye needed for any oil combination you want to use

and I can send this out to you. I also have a few recipes and other articles.

Making soap is pretty easy. Making really good looking artisan style soap takes

some skill. I'm at the basic level where I can make functional soap, but I

haven't mastered the skill of making it look really pretty. owentd at
