Dana,

My son Austin was diagnosed Bi-Polar 1 and Aspergers Syndrome at age

3. I can empathize with how you feel and I hope that I can help.

Dana ,I

know someone on another list whose child is 6 and has both . The possibility of

him having or developing Early onset Bi-polar is something my

grandsons team says we have to be very mindful of . I understand and share your concern . I

believe that there is a group specifically for autistic and bipolar disorder .

I am

bipolar but I was not diagnosed until I was an adult (early 20's).... so I know

I stand really good odds that one of my kids may have inherited it.

My son

who has been diagnosed as having Asperger's has also been stating things like

" Mommy, I can't control my mind " .... " My mind is racing " ...

then there are other days when he says .... " Mommy, Nothing is making me

happy " .... " I need something " ...(but he can't identify what it

is) .... or " Mommy, nobody likes me " ....

It is

enough to break my heart... my husband and I met with his pediatrician and she

is suggesting we see a Pediatric Psychiatrist. We have an

appointment in Jan. (that is the soonest we could get into him)

My son

will be 5 in January... has not been on any medication for depression or

hyperactivity... but our O.T. finally stated that she thought it would be worth

looking into it.

Dear Dana,

I lurk here but wanted to answer you. My ds was diagnosed with

Asperger's and Bipolar last January. He is 9 1/2. He started showing

symptoms in kindergarten, but none so severe that we thought he

needed treatment. Things got progressivly worse in 2nd grade, and

that's when we went to Stanford and had him evaluated by their child

psychiatry department. Bipolar runs in my family, but I am not

affected. My ds is doing great, and is on Lithium and Wellbutrin.

Your son seems very bright, and it's great that he can express his

feelings so well. January will be here before you know it. Most

Child Psychiatrists have very long waiting lists. In the mean time,

start a journal of his behavior, and of things he says that concern

you. I also recommend that you get a book called " The Bipolar

Child " . I believe the authors have the last name of Papalos.

Just the fact that you are so educated on bipolar is great for your

son. We were not, but have learned alot since then!

I hope this helps,

Ann

Aspergers & Bipolar

I'm fairly new to the group... but I was wondering if anyone on the loop also has a child that has booth Asperger's and Bipolar?

My son will be 5 in January... has not been on any medication for depression or hyperactivity... but our O.T. finally stated that she thought it would be worth looking into it.
