Guest guest
FYI - This morning on Good Morning America, the dad of one child reported that his daughter has been recently diagnosed with Aspergers over the summer by a school psychologist. He said the school knew she had a problem with bad judgment. She had a full time Aid that went everywhere with her at school, even to the bathroom. He said she was disruptive in class, yet the school insisted on mainstreaming her in regular education classes. It sounded to me as if he had been asking for the school to take her out of regular education and get her more help. I think this parent's public use of the Asperger defense is harmful to our children. It gives validity to the argument against including children with disabilities in schools. He just gave students/parents/teachers/administrators a reason to fear our children.
Guest guest
, I also fear that schools will be afraid to include children with disabilities but I don't think we stop trying to educate them when we can. Many schools , as we know, are already afraid to include children with disabilities whether they have any understanding of the specifics of the disability or not. I like the fact that this father was at least trying to educate the public about disabilities but what really bothered me more than anything was that I have never heard of an Asperger's child being this willfully evil towards another person so I wonder if there wasn't something else going on with her too ? That willful evilness seems to lend more towards a personality disorder of some sort and that would really be a wrong education for the schools ( or anyone else ) to think that all Asperger's children are capable of something like what she did. Certainly a tough situation, that's for sure. I will be curious to see what the schools decide should happen to her but I think, in the end, a decision will be based on the act that she committed rather than if she has a disability or not.
