Guest guest
<<Hello. My name is . I am a single mother of two young children, the oldest of whom has been diagnosed with Asperger's. I am not exactly sure what that means or what I can do. Would someone please help me?>> Hello , Take a deep breath! My daughter was finally diagnosed with Aspergers about 6 years ago. Some questions: 1) Where do you live? 2) How old is your child? 3) What sex is the child? Asperger's is what's called an autistic spectrum disorder. What it means in reality is that your child learns a lot differently than other kids and that he/she has problems with social cues. There are also sensory issues: my daughter doesn't like loud noises (unless of course it's her stereo and SHE'S turned it up), she only likes certain foods and fabrics, so that's a taste and texture thing. She tends to be very focused on her interests. A leading expert is Tony Attwood who likens Asperger's with the sitcom Third Rock from the Sun. Feel free to email me off list. ,RN lemobrn@... Guest guest
Hi , I would recommend that you read Tony Attwood's book called Asperger syndrome and also that you use the on-line resource OASIS: http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/ which has loads of stuff about Asperger's. Others on this list will be able to tell you about the sort of help that is available pre-school and in school. Your child will need an IEP at school to detail the problems they have and the way the school is going to help to overcome those. in England

Guest guest
They started an IEP at his school last year. Since his psychologist is now involved, the final diagnosis has been made. School just started this year, so I have yet to speak with his school counselor, but hopefully we'll be able to connect soon. > Hi , > I would recommend that you read Tony Attwood's book called Asperger syndrome > and also that you use the on-line resource OASIS: > > http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/ > > which has loads of stuff about Asperger's.
