Hi Fern,

I have not heard of Dirks. Where is she from - and I'll see if she's in any of my directories.

Fern, I don't want to be negative, but frankly, I'm a bit concerned about this situation. It's really better for a serious condition, to actually see the counselor, as much of the diagnosis is based upon visual exams of the face, hands, feet, body odor, pulses, & the voice. I'm also a bit apprehensive, because 3 years ago, I saw a counselor and experienced a marked decline in my health. Since my condition was not as serious as cancer, I survived, but saw lingering problems for about 2 years. Thankfully, I found Warren Kramer, who was able to help me turn around the decline.

However, since money is an issue, here are a few questions that might help you decide if is a good match for you.

1) Does she portray "health" to you? Does she look balanced & happy? (Since, you'll not actually be seeing her, do the best that you can from her photographs)

2) Do the two of you "click" - will she be able to motivate/encourage you to do the lifestyle changes that are involved?

3) Can she communicate well? Even if she's the best counselor in the world, but you misunderstand her recommendations, they won't be helpful.

4) Well she be patient to keep repeating what she's already said, because the first time, it went over your head?

5) Is she a good cook? In my opinion, counselors who don't cook, aren't very helpful as counselors.

Some questions to ask :

1) How long have you been a counselor? (It takes a LONG time to develop intuition to understand a person's condition. Being able to understand your condition is a MUST! The counselor who did not help me was very knowledgeable & extremely nice, but had no clue that his recommendations were making me worse.)

2) Who did you work with? (This is also important, as the wider her education, the more "tricks" she'll have up her sleeve to help you. She ought to know lots of remedies that she can use to help balance your condition, relieve cancer symptoms, etc. But of course, in order to recommend the correct remedy, she'll first have to understand your condition :-)

3) How many people have you helped? A counselor told me once that it takes 10,000 clients before a counselor knows anything. Perhaps that was an exaggeration, but all the counselors that I admire, have helped many.

4) How many people have you helped with breast cancer? (get their names & numbers. Call them, and ask how helped them)

5) How many of those have you kept in contact with? (if she doesn't stay in contact with people, find out why. Usually, people are very grateful for great counselors & love to keep in touch.)

Fern, is there anyplace in LA, where you can take cooking classes? And I've heard that Porter has moved into the area. If at all possible, please review some of the previous posts and find some of the groups that were mentioned. It helps to really be immersed in classes & learning so that you can get the most possible benefit from your consultation.

My thoughts are with you.

Dear Fern and Dottie,

Thank you for your detailed and very helpful post, Dottie!!! I share your feelings of concern.

Dirks is in the greater Philadelphia area and friends with Waxman Brown. They wrote a wonderful book on children's cooking together called 'yummy, yummy in my tummy'. When I met four years ago I conceived her more as a macrobiotic teacher and wonderful cook than a counselor. (Probably most recognized for his counseling practice in that area is Denny Waxman with the great success story Recalled by Life by J. Sattilaro.)

Dear Fern, I would also urge you to contact a counselor in your area. Your body and constitution are unique, the circumstanzas that led to health crisis and dis-ease are individual as well. Therefore, it is mandatory to do a physical exam when you have a life threatening condition. It is also an encouraging and eye-opening experience. May I suggest Mina Dobic in Carlsbad, CA http://www.minadobic.org/ . I never met her personally, but her story touched and inspired me very much. She was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer and was told to live only two more months. She is a cancer survivor of twenty years and dedicated her life to help others in similar situations, also despite financial constraints. In her book 'my beautiful life' (please read, very motivational) she describes her path from cancer patient to macrobiotic counsellor and it says she has never turned anyone away who could not afford to pay. Her contact details are on her website, please get in touch with her and see if you 'click'. I believe she is less than two hours drive away from you...

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Love,

Nadine

Dear Nadine,

Thanks so much for these additional comments! I had wondered if were more a teacher, than a counselor. Of course, the best of both worlds is to have a counselor recommending a specific diet for one's unique condition and a teacher to ensure that the recommendations are being followed as easily & correctly as possible. Many times, we forget how difficult it can be to get started in macro, especially when there are health issues. The support of a community is invaluable.

Oh, duh, of course, I now recognize 's name. lol, when I read Fern's question, the name sounded vaguely familiar, but I thought that it was just reminding me of Dirk Benedict.....

And yes, Denny is fabulous. Although, I've never seen him as a counselor, I have all of his books & have listened to his lectures at the various workshops that I've attended. But most importantly, I've seen/talked with many of his clients, whom are happy & balanced folk. Likewise with , who also shares so freely with advice & encouragement on her brother's group. So, is in good company.

Hugs to Nadine & Fern!

Yep, is cool. But I wonder if she's not more of a counselor for someone in good health and wanting to keep it that way. I'm not sure if she's worked with many cancer clients.

Briscoe is an excellent counselor & not too far away from LA. Warren Kramer just visited LA, so probably won't be back for a while. The LA contact person is on his website, so maybe Fern could talk with her to see if she's holding cooking classes. Knowing as much as possible about macrobiotics before seeing a counselor is helpful.

And yes, many times, having back-up chefs when people are on a healing diet is invaluable! However, it sounds like Fern's budget may still be a sticking point for everything. Sometimes, problems have to be solved "outside the box". ;-)

BTW, Danny, I believe that you're the one who liked the Beatles? Our PBS station had a fundraiser last night and ran a great show with their concerts....brought back some wonderful, old memories....

Yes I’m a huge fan.

Did they show the concert in Washington dc, in the

round, where Ringo had to get off his drum set between songs and turn it, so it

would face different parts of the croud. Classic

Danny

At fox Venice

in Venice ca.

in the 70’s they would have beatle marathons and show films all night

long. Good times

Oops, So sorry, Danny! I wasn't typing as fast as I was thinking......and left out: PBS ran "Rain: The Beatles Experience", so, if they re-enacted Ringo's turning of the drums, I missed it.

Hi Danny,

Would you mind if I called you about the macrobiotic chefs you know of, as I am having difficulty finding a macrobiotic class to attend. Someone helpfully suggested seeing Sanae Suzuki, but she and her husband will be in Japan this month, and the class they do offer is in Japanese. So I do need some help in this area.

Thanks

Hi Fern, i would just like to say the foremost macrobiotic counselor

when dealing with cancer is Denny Waxman, the founder and director of

The Strengthening Health Institute in Philadelphia, PA. i know u

mention financial concerns, and being a single mom myself, i can

relate. You can get a copy of abook he wrote called Ten Steps to

Strengthening Your Health off Amazon for very litle money. Fern i

had been involved in macro. a long time when i got the book and it

changed my world. i was suffering from severe depression and anxiety,

and now my world it completely bright. Denny was featured last year on

a show called The Incurables on DISH network showing his work with

people in various stages on cancer. A book was also written about

him entitled Recalled by Life by a doctor in Philadelphia who had

received a terminal diagnosis and was cured by Denny. Please

remember Fern that there are many aspects to macro. it is not just a

diet. One very crucial yet simple thing to do is to have many green

plants in your living space. We eat 2 or 3 times a day, but we are

constantly breathing, and the oxygen will clean out your cells. Please

remember to chew your food well, also.

Hi again everyone,

Just popping in here to see what's going on. How nice when so many

in a group are in the same physical vicinity.

Danny, who were the mb chefs you mentioned? - just curious - always

love knowing more about who's where.

I mentioned in another site (ahem, ok, my own site - so those

already there, apologies for duplication, for those not there, ha,

you're missing out, but I know, too much on computer already. I

totally understand) on Porter's blog

http://www.hipchicksmacrobiotics.com/blog/

she mentioned how she's

just moved to LA - I'd go run to her if I were there :>)

also there's always a listing of several people in L.A. in

Macrobiotics Today - one who's been posting on my site (hint hint)

has been Micah Israel, at 310-477-5534 - here's what the ad says

(this is from Nov/Dec 2007, but I believe is still correct - I'll

double check with Micah and let you know if it's different)

micahseclecticcuisine ;

Micah Israel; 310-477-5534 * Kushi

trained Macrobiotic Chef offerring Eclectic-Gourmet and Healing

Cuisine, Personal Chef Services, Group and Private Cooking Classes,

Pick-Up and Delivery Meals, Kitchen Set-Ups, Informative Shooping

Trips, Available to Travel

Sounds great to me. Fern, I wish you a wonderful healing experience.

oh boy, that's ancient history already

you don't happen to also be on facebook?? all sorts of pictures were posted there, video also

there was an amazing band - played all kinds of stuff - and my absolute favorite was Irish music, which my daugher danced beautifully to (also in the video) - also Beatle's stuff from the 60's, was fun

and they had so many talented friends that took to the mike - including my son who played classical guitar, and made a quip, this isn't to dance with music

lovely area, way out in nature - ok, a couple things weren't ideal, but I'm going to forget about that!!!

thanks for asking

Yes

No matter how I try to tell people, they

don’t understand (until they do) that the universe will take care of you.

i woould just like to add that although i still

stress out about money occasionally, i found found that the further i go with

macrobiotics, the more the universe has seemed to get behind me, and money as

well as other good things are beginning to flow toward me, instead of me

trying to chase it, and being unhappy and miserable to boot. Whjen i

had a consultation with Denny Waxman in October of 2000, i was a single mom

of 4 children and i didn't have a job. it cost over $250.00 but it has

absolutely changed my world, and everything keeps getting better.
