Giving Meds

Before Jake began taking pills on his own (Just this past year at age 10!) we always had great success with applesauce. Stick the pill in a spoonful and he'd swallow it right down without seeming to even notice it was there. Yogurt or pudding worked occasionally in the past but not consistently. I think their texture was too smooth, the applesauce is just chunky enough that a pill in there isn't blatantly obvious.

I hope this helps, I remember having to try to hold Jake down with hubby just to get some liquid Tylenol or an antibiotic or whatever into Jake when he had the occasional cold or ear infection when he was younger. Homeboy would not take anything, and we tried every brand and formula out there, and could detect that liquid stuff no matter what we tried to hide it in. As much as we tried to avoid it, it finally came down to brute force. I'm still traumatized by those sessions that left all of us shaken and battered. To be honest, I think they bothered me more than they bothered Jake!

We were amazed to discover when we started Jake on Topamax this past year that hey, he can swallow pills!! So I tried giving him regular Tylenol instead of the meltaways for his next headache and hey, he can swallow those too! Now he'll swallow two or three pills at once without even blinking. It's another one of Jake's what we call "When/Where the hell did he learn that?!" skills. Every once in a while he'll come out with something that just amazes us because we had no clue that he knew that or could do that and he hasn't been taught that so where the hell did it come from? Knowing how to read at age 2 is an obvious one. Knowing north/south/east/west and using east/west instead of left/right to indicate what he wanted is another example (he was 5 and hadn't been formally introduced to left/right or north/south/east/west yet). He does like to keep us guessing at what's going on in that head of his!

Love,

Judy

Re: Med giving help needed Posted by: " Christiansen" cathychristiansen84@... cathychristiansen84 Date: Tue Nov 3, 2009 10:22 pm ((PST))my daughter is a feeding disorder and can only eat pureed so taking meds is tough but she does it. She takes 10 liquid meds a day with a siringe and me holding her down and forcing it down her throat when she gags. then we sit up and breath and take a sip of water and breath again so she doesn't puke. she is better now and just takes them without the restraining. she takes about 6 meds a day by capsules I open and put in her baby food and stir it up and she eats it. She knows it is in there and I tell her what each one is for. I am very honest with her and she seems to like knowing why she is taking it. I mean specific too not just to help you feel better stuff. I think it ihelps her if she is in the know of what is happening. she is very curious. some meds can be given in suppositories I have heard but we haven't tried that yet.
