Guest guest
Heya all Been following the list for a few days now, and would like to say hi and ask a question. To start out, busy with my first brew, got my first scoby from my mother in law on Sunday, and she helped me prepare it. The scooby was quite thin, like a thine crepe, and we made it with a combination of black tea, and rooibos tea. She been brewing them like that for a few weeks now, and they seem fine, and the resulting tea tastes good too, no idia how the rooibos will affect it though, will try a few batches of pure green / black tea for while when done with this batch. We're in South Africa, so the Rooibos is easey for us to get hold of. ALso, with it being winter here, temperatures are quite low, especially in the room I keep my brew. It's the only clean / safe room in the house and termperatures in the room range form 14 to 18^C so the Scooby is growing slowly. I try to heat the room when at home, so with today being a suturday, I'm keeping at 25^C all day. My Scoby floted to the top a day ago, it seems some gas (CO2 I assume) caused it to become boyent. The problem is it's floeted up to the top, and got stuck to the (barely visible) baby forming at the top. The original Scobu has also folded up, into quarters almost, in the process. I assume this wouldnt be a crisis, but the original is still so thin, that it might form into a funny shape? When the batch is done, I'll use the baby to start a " Starter Jar " in pure reen tea. From what I've read, green tea sems to provide the best Scooby growth? Keep well all!
Guest guest
Hi there! I am also relatively new to all this...however from my limited experience I would say: Your 'baby' is not in any danger...just don't disturb the jar it is brewing in at THAT will interrupt its growth. The baby may have a lump/bump where the mother butts up against it...this is normal...very few of my babies have been a perfect pancake!! The mother may also adher to the baby...when your brew is done you can usually just gently separate them. If they don't look perfect its OK...they wll make a good brew nonetheless!
