Guest guest
Hmmm. I don't know. It says it can be used as a food container, but there's a lot of difference between something dry and something wet and acidic. I sure wouldn't use it if there are any cracks in the glaze. Sorry I can't be of more help. -Patty > > The crock is actually brown and gray and I think it is pretty old. The 2 is > surrounded by a star. Guest guest
Links to the FDA and CDC Talking papers on Kombucha http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~lrd/TPMUSHRM.html http://www.cdc.gov/search.do?action=search & queryText=kombucha see pictures of actual mold online at http://www.happyherbalist.com/kombucha_brewing_guide.htm Common sense applies to making kombucha just as in all fermented foods. Guest guest
Hi, If you are in the slightest doubt and you cannot get any specific answer to the question on the safety of the crock...do not use it...Not only can you get sick from any lead that maybe in the glaze, also you will not know you are getting sick for quite some time, the lead is accumlative and will store it's self in body fat and the liver...Also acids in food and drink leach out other heavy metals that maybe are in the glaze, be carefull with glass, make sure you don't use lead crystal. I heard a story not long ago about a lady who had been drinking kt for about a year, she got sick and it was found she had liver cancer, it was put down to the kt...now I don't believe the kt caused that...maybe, just maybe the kt had become toxic through the brewing process, maybe it was the container or could have been mould, who knows. I just think you have to be carefull. blessings, o. > > Links to the FDA and CDC Talking papers on Kombucha > http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~lrd/TPMUSHRM.html > http://www.cdc.gov/search.do?action=search & queryText=kombucha > > see pictures of actual mold online at > http://www.happyherbalist.com/kombucha_brewing_guide.htm > > Common sense applies to making kombucha just as in all fermented foods. > > > Peace > > Ed Kasper LAc. & family > Licensed Acupuncturist and Medical Herbalist > www.HappyHerbalist.com > > ............................................. > > I read in some websites to not brew KT in any ceramic vessels as > > the KT properties could possibly " pull " lead out of the ceramic > > which could cause lead poisoning. Guest guest
You had best be glad that is not with us at present- she would have raked you over the coals for this one LOL That " story " you just repeated has been going around for quite a number of years, it has NO basis in fact. The woman had liver cancer- she was trying to cure it. Period.! There was nothing wrong with her KT- the only thing wrong was the rumor that was conveniently started- and it just won't die. There are folks who like nothing better than to scare us away from our healthy foods and KT is no different than any of the rest. IF it works, then someone is going to pronounce it unsafe- to prevent the rest of us from trying it. KT has been with us for centuries. IF it were unsafe, don't you think there would be more stories than just this ONE rumor that keeps circulating even tho there is not one shred of evidence to support it? Nuff said, Zoe > I heard a story not long ago about a lady who had been drinking kt for about a year, she > got sick and it was found she had liver cancer, it was put down to the kt...now I don't > believe the kt caused that...maybe, just maybe the kt had become toxic through the > brewing process, maybe it was the container or could have been mould, who knows. Guest guest
o, Thanks for your comments and concern. After posting my question I immediately moved my kombucha back to their glass crocks, where it will stay until I get to Fante's in Philly. I saw 2 gallon Mason jars there as well as 2 1/2 gallon glass crocks. I am hoping to hear from an antique crock specialist who can tell me about the glazes on the old crocks. Until then I will stay away from using them. My kombucha was very, very happy in there.
