Dear Friends, As one who has diabetes, I want to bring to your attention an organization and a man who are fighting very hard for more research dollars for your kidney and pancreas diseases. I am a proud member of The FAIR Foundation (at www.fairfoundation.org) and our President & CEO, Dr. Darling, is traveling throughout the USA educating America on the need for more funding for our diseases, which are presently not being treated fairly by our government’s National Institutes of Health (NIH). For example, even though diabetes kills more Americans than AIDS and breast cancer combined, the NIH is spending only $80 on each diabetic versus $3,084 on each AIDS patient. In fact, just the increase in funding for AIDS since 1999 is an amount that is greater than the ENTIRE diabetes budget for 2005. Many of us also suffer from cardiovascular disease and the NIH is spending only $40 on each one of us. When one considers that there are 950,000 in this country with AIDS versus 16 million with diabetes and 61 million with cardiovascular disease, one can only say, “That’s not fair!” In Dr. Darling’s speeches, he plays a very powerful video that was produced by the American Diabetes Association and ABC’s 20/20. Dr. Darling is the 2003 National Public Citizen of the Year as awarded by the National Association of Social Workers. He has suffered from kidney disease (hepatorenal syndrome, diabetes), high BP, heart attack, liver cancer , Muscular Dystrophy and has had three liver transplants so he is well qualified to speak to the unfairness in funding by the NIH.
